The project will provide Aboriginal, ecological humanities, and pedagogical input into the problem of environmental sustainability in the Murray-Darling Basin, complementing current physical science initiatives. It will have immediate national benefit in the production of educational resources based on alternative and previously invisible stories of water in the Narran Lakes area, an icon site in the Murray-Darling Basin. This project will investigate historical moments when miscegenation was seen as a means of removing indigenous identity in Australia and the United States. This research will answer recent calls for transnational histories which explore the intimate side of colonisation. My hypothesis is that the presence of a large population of African American people in the United States made white America ....Whitewashing: Miscegenation, Assimilation and Genocide in the United States and Australia, 1860s-1960s. This project will investigate historical moments when miscegenation was seen as a means of removing indigenous identity in Australia and the United States. This research will answer recent calls for transnational histories which explore the intimate side of colonisation. My hypothesis is that the presence of a large population of African American people in the United States made white Americans comparatively more apprehensive about miscegenation than white Australians. Research thus focused on the networks of small and rather marginal Islamic radical groups such as Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), while the broader national and international trends that give rise to this and other, more moderate and popular new forms of religiosity remained unexplored.
