The Epistemology of Colour Vision. This project will advance knowledge on the important traditional philosophical topic of colour and colour perception by drawing both on philosophical and scientific sources. The problem of colour is one to which Australian philosophy has made seminal contribution. For this reason, this project will continue to develop an Australian expertise in the area and help to make Australia a world centre of research in the area.

Philosophical Foundations for Probabilistic Inference and Probabilistic Prediction. This exciting and innovative project aims to lay new foundations for contemporary philosophy of science. We shall use basic Minimum Message Length (MML) principles to vastly improve on current philosophical accounts of scientific inference and scientific prediction. We shall also use the theory to develop new and exciting answers to longstanding problems in philosophy of science concerning induction, projectability, private languages, determinism and intelligence. A theory based on MML principles will demonstrate the clear inadequacies of competing classical approaches, and will completely reshape the way in which philosophers think about Bayesian theories of inference.

Neglected Problems of Time: Metaphysical and topological issues arising from the physics of time. Foundational philosophical research contributes to the global stock of understanding. Further, it secures and enhances Australia's international standing as a site of foundational research. Given the global nature of higher education, this enhancement of reputation serves to make Australia a more desirable destination for students (and, in this indirect way, makes a contribution to one of Australia's largest markets). More directly, foundational research enhances any community in which it takes place--the thirst for understanding is one of the distinctive characteristics of human beings, and support for the quest for understanding is an essential part of any well-functioning society.

Although there is evidence that people can be taught to think critically, educators don't really know how. They don't know what works, what doesn't, and why. This study will systematically examine the effectiveness of different techniques for teaching reasoning and will cross-validate an Australian test of reasoning - the GSA - with an international standard. The expected outcomes of the study are data about what improves reasoning and about the success of the GSA. The significance of the study lies in the potential benefits these data will have to students and employers.

The Structure of Moral Reasoning: Hume, Kant and the Evidence from Psychopathology and Neuroscience. What can moral philosophers hope to learn from the sciences of the mind? Recent work on the disorders of autism and psychopathy, has promised to reshape a longstanding philosophical debate between Kantians and Humeans on the role of empathy (sympathy) in moral thinking. This project will draw out the implications of a range of neuroscientific findings for key questions in moral theory and also consider how the normative and conceptual claims made by such theories, about what must be true of a moral judgment, are connected to descriptive claims about the psychology of the moral agents who make them.

From Sigmund Freud to Jacques Lacan, disputes in psychoanalysis have typically hinged on the question of whether the knowledge produced by psychoanalysis deserves the appellation scientific. If so, in what way? If not, why not? What sort of psychoanalytic institution would be adequate to psychoanalysis? scientific claims? This interdisciplinary project is a historical, critical and constructive examination of psychoanalytic theory and practice, which re-examines key texts from the vantage point of the scientific question. Finally, the project will ask what psychoanalysis can contribute to the understanding of other scientific practices.
