Online machine learning problems arise from situations where data is provided a point at a time. There are many classical algorithms for solving such problems based on the principle of stochastic gradient descent. Recent research by the CIs and others have thrown up interesting but diverse geometric connections that offer new insights. The proposed research aims to integrate the understanding of these algorithms with the aim of designing algorithms better able to exploit prior knowledge, and to extend existing algorithms to new problem domains thus offering well principled and well understood algorithms for solving a variety of novel online problems.

Advanced Processing for Through-the-Wall Radar Imaging. There is currently considerable interest around the world in imaging systems that can 'see' through-the-walls. This project is at the cutting edge of through-the-wall radar imaging research and technology. It will benefit both the defence and security industries, and position Australia among the leading countries in this technology, as only a handful of research teams around the world have the necessary background and expertise in this area .... Advanced Processing for Through-the-Wall Radar Imaging. There is currently considerable interest around the world in imaging systems that can 'see' through-the-walls. This project is at the cutting edge of through-the-wall radar imaging research and technology. It will benefit both the defence and security industries, and position Australia among the leading countries in this technology, as only a handful of research teams around the world have the necessary background and expertise in this area. The research outcomes will enhance the capability of the military, law enforcement, counter-terrorism, and search and rescue personnel. It will play a vital role in protecting and safeguarding Australia from terrorism and crime.

Classification of human movement patterns from a triaxial accelerometer for home telecare. Classification of human movement patterns from a triaxial accelerometer for home telecare. The purpose of the proposed ambulatory monitoring system is to ensure that a community-dwelling elderly person receives automatic, timely aid in the event of an adverse situation while alone at home, such as a fall or stroke. This project is aimed at the priority area 'ageing well, ageing productively'. Providing rapid assistance after a fall will prevent much of the morbidity, distress and socio-economic cost that are associated with falls. Specifically, this project brings new advanced digital signal processing algorithms to bear on the difficult signal enhancement and classification problems associated with the information stream received from the triaxial accelerometer worn by the elderly client.
