Unlocking IP - Expanding public rights and the public domain in Australian copyright. This research investigates how Australia's digital commons, comprising both the public domain and public rights created by open content and open software licensing, can be expanded and protected. It focuses on 'self help' actions within the existing statutory context, in Australia's distinct legal and cultural context, and on comprehensiveness. Its significance is that healthy commons-based production of inform ....Unlocking IP - Expanding public rights and the public domain in Australian copyright. This research investigates how Australia's digital commons, comprising both the public domain and public rights created by open content and open software licensing, can be expanded and protected. It focuses on 'self help' actions within the existing statutory context, in Australia's distinct legal and cultural context, and on comprehensiveness. Its significance is that healthy commons-based production of information is essential to Australia as an innovative country and a democracy. The principal outcomes will be better understood and more efficient public rights licences, incentives to copyright owners to create them, and technical aids to allow users to find commons content.Read moreRead less
Design of Secure Electronic Voting Systems. It is inevitable that electronic voting will eventually replace current paper based voting schemes. The main outcome of the research will be the fundamental knowledge required to develop secure electronic voting schemes. The security aspects of the design will be thoroughly analysed to ensure that the integrity of the ballot is maintained without compromising user privacy. The practical aspects of implementing such a system will also be investigated ....Design of Secure Electronic Voting Systems. This project will produce tools to enhance collaboration between researchers at physically disparate locations. It builds on emerging Grid computer network technology to create virtual research communities that permit secure sharing of geographically disjoint resources such as data collections, computer software and computer processing power. The project’s test case will create a community of researchers into brain disease (e.g. schizophrenia) who are located in three Australian and one USA site and who will share their patient data, analysis tools and special-purpose computer equipment. The developed tools will allow relatively simple and rapid deployment of similar research grids suitable for a wide range of collaborative projects.Read moreRead less

Complex networks such large power grids, the Internet, transportation networks and co-operation networks of all kinds provide challenges for frontier technologies particularly computing, communication and control. In particular, advanced societies have become dependent on large infrastructure networks to an extent beyond our capability to plan and control them. The recent spate of collapses in power grids and virus attacks on the Internet illustrate the need for research on modelling, analysis of behaviour, planning and control in such networks. This project aims to establish research in this area for Australia's benefit.Read moreRead less
