Performance enhancement of tidal turbine arrays. This project aims to understand the environmental impact of turbines, by studying how an optimised array of turbines interacts with the downstream turbulent tidal flow. Tidal power could contribute substantially to Australia's Renewable Energy goals. Australia's coastlines produce over 2.4 terajoules of tidal energy, and research into turbine optimisation, array design and environmental impact is needed to exploit this potential. Fluid dynamics and optimisation researchers will design an improved vertical axis tidal turbine for use in the Torres Strait Islands. This project could improve tidal turbine design and turbine placement designs, and improve understanding of interactions between turbines and the maritime environment.Read moreRead less

Wave-Induced Upper-Ocean Mixing. The wave-induced mixing is of principal importance for air-sea interaction models since heat capacity of 2-3m of the ocean water is equal to the capacity of the entire atmosphere. This project will study and implement such mixing, including the newly described physical phenomenon of wave-induced turbulence, into a variety of models. This project will study and implement such mixing, including the newly described physical phenomenon of wave-induced turbulence, into a variety of models. As a result, wave models and global climate models will be coupled. It is believed that such coupling will enhance our ability to predict the impact of global climate change. As part of the project, predictions of changes to the global wave climate will be developed. Such predictions are important to a nation such as Australia where significant population and economic assets are located close to the coast.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop a novel framework for predicting how artificial reef structures can be optimally designed to protect coastlines from erosion and flooding. It will develop new theory and models to quantify how waves interact with complex reef structures to reduce wave heights and extreme water levels at the shoreline. Expected outcomes include new practical tools and design guidelines that can be adopted by coastal engineers and managers to maximise coastal protection by reefs. This will boost Australia’s capacity to protect populations and critical infrastructure from coastal hazards and support Australian industries to lead the international development of innovative nature-based coastal protection strategies.Read moreRead less

A thermally stratified sea ice wave interaction facility: Predictions of climate change now impact all levels of society as future political, social and environmental plans are made on the basis of these models. Predictions require models of many complex dynamical processes with a wide range of parameters. An important process is the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) dynamics. The MIZ is the region between the open ocean and the fully ice-covered ocean where waves and ice interact, causing ice-breaking and wave attenuation. This unique facility will enable experiments in sea-ice-wave interactions in a controlled environment. Water and air temperature, thermal stratification, water waveform and ice properties will be adjusted in order to preserve key characteristics of the complex ocean environment.Read moreRead less

Waves generated by tropical cyclones are a key design parameter for shipping, coastal and offshore structures and coastal erosion. The accurate prediction of tropical cyclone generated extreme waves is consequently of critical importance. Outcomes of the project will lead to more accurate wave forecasts, both for tropical cyclones and other extreme events. The main result will be a new non-linear approach to be used in prediction models. This approach is expected to be broadly implemented by the meteorological, oceanographic and scientific communities around the world and potentially replace existing algorithms in spectral wave models. The economic and social implications of an enhanced ability to predict such extremes are significant.Read moreRead less
