Summary
A high resolution, high-throughput chromatographic system for separation and characterisation of complex samples. Purchase of this equipment will support innovative and collaborative research addressing three of the National Research Priority areas. For example, defining novel drug delivery systems, or the chemical components present in Australia's bioresources, addresses 'Frontier technologies for building and transforming Australian industries', particularly the priority goals of breakthrough ....A high resolution, high-throughput chromatographic system for separation and characterisation of complex samples. High Performance Liquid Chromatography - Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-ICPMS). HPLC-ICP-MS is the most reliable cutting edge technology for speciation of metals and metalloids in biological and environmental matrices, and is essential for toxicological studies, which is a major aim behind NRCET's establishment. Socioeconomic inequality and diet: a multilevel study of why socioeconomic groups differ in their food purchasing behaviours. Socioeconomically disadvantaged groups experience higher mortality and morbidity rates for many chronic diseases (e.g. heart disease and type 2 diabetes). Dietary quality, and factors affecting this such as food purchasing choice, play a key role in the onset and progression of these types of diseases, and the lower quality diets of families from disadvantaged backgrounds ....Socioeconomic inequality and diet: a multilevel study of why socioeconomic groups differ in their food purchasing behaviours. Identification of nutritional bioactives in tropical fruit. Information on the nutritional properties of tropical fruits is currently limited to chemical analysis of vitamins, minerals and fibre. This project aims to identify additional nutritional components within tropical fruits by assessing activities against a range of cell-based assays. Selected assays will represent cellular processes relating to e.g. lipid metabolism, cancer prevention, and antioxidant effects. It is estimated that the direct and indirect cost of diet-related diseases to Australia is between $2-3 billion per annum. One of the most important things that can be done to prevent diet-related disease is to encourage the population to eat more fruits and vegetables. The aim of this project is to examine the effect of price and perceived quality on the type and quantity of fruits and vegetables cons ....The importance of price and perceived quality to the demand for fresh fruits and vegetables.
