The Australian sites of practice in the project, and also the wider community will benefit through access to musical expertise for remotely located musicians. The principles developed in this study will be transferable to other web 2.0 interactions. Not only will it give insight into the unique qualities of online but also face-to-face interactions which are not easily replicated in online space This will be one of the rare sites where informal learning contexts can actually be studied and this knowledge should inform more formal educational contexts. Additionally the study of user-generated content will have a stimulating impact on the future of music publishing in Australia.

Music production and technology in Australian Film: enabling Australian film to embrace innovation. Given the increasing tendency of the US film industry to co-opt international talent and production bases into its global operation (New Zealand being a prime example), Australian cinema faces mounting hurdles in its quest for national and international success. While education centres such as AFTRS have contributed to excellence in key aspects of local production, Australian film music has been afforded minimal attention. Consequently, music industry training and production often proceeds on the bases of vague assumptions and inefficient precedents. In-depth research is vital to inform national training, production and policy making so as to allow Australian cinema to embrace innovation and engage creatively with the international market.

Mapping the novice-expert continuum in composing and performing. The project explores those strategies that develop human potential across the novice-expert continuum; foster expert thought and practice; and encourage and manage innovation. Benefits include the generation of new knowledge that will impact on music learning theory and practice internationally.

The project will investigate and prototype innovations which reinvent the orchestra from its current 19th Century form, to one which maintains high quality but resonates with more recent changes in music consumption patterns, musical tastes, performance modes (e.g. immersive), distribution media, and the revolution in instrument design. A musical, technological, social and audience analysis of orchestral history will inform an action research inquiry into possible future success paths. Resulting innovations in music repertoire, product and events will produce new revenue models for orchestras around an expanded market base and export of IP. Orchestral sustainability will also strengthen Australia's cultural fabric.

Towards efficient real-time generation of detectable musical macrostructure. Efficient generation of detectable large scale musical structure is needed for commercial audiovisual applications, and for creative music making. But computer mediation of music has focused elsewhere: on sound synthesis and sequencing, editing, mixing and notation. I will apply computational processes like the handling of chunks of genetic information in evolution, to generate large scale musical structure. I will control segmentation; framing of internal segments; spatialisation; and the overlaying of separable musical streams. Expert cognitive assessment of the resultant structures will be investigated, and theories of segmentation, streaming and their relationships with expression and affect developed and tested.
