Migration and its socio-economic and cultural consequences in Australia. This network will develop an interdisciplinary multi-layered approach to understanding migration processes and the related social, health and economic effects. With the input of scholars in diverse fields, the network will play a significant role in the development of a national migration database, in training early career researchers and in developing social policy. This network will develop an interdisciplinary multi-layered approach to understanding migration processes and the related social, health and economic effects. With the input of scholars in diverse fields, the network will play a significant role in the development of a national migration database, in training early career researchers and in developing social policy. It will also stimulate new areas of research, integrate the dynamics of migrant populations with migrants' own experiences and perceptions, add to knowledge in the priority area 'safeguarding Australia', and enhance our understanding of the cultural, social and economic impact on Australia of a significant migrant presence.Read moreRead less
The role of community connectedness in retaining skilled migrant women in Australia. Australia faces a severe skills shortage in areas central to its social fabric and that are traditionally dominated by women: nursing, childcare and teaching. While we are successful in attracting skilled migrants to fill these gaps, one third choose to leave Australia within 5 years. It studies the extent to which tightening up of the selection procedure for migrants and limiting access to social security has led to improved labour market success. This research investigates the dynamics of immigrant settlement in Australia. It studies the extent to which tightening up of the selection procedure for migrants and limiting access to social security has led to improved labour market success. It analyses the extent to which different groups of migrants who come from different countries and enter under different visa categories go through a phase of unemployment, followed by a ?bad job? (in terms of their previous qualifications, wage levels, satisfaction with the job, etc.) before moving into a ?good job?.
