Living kidney donation remains a complex ethical issue. The expectation is that the risks to the donor are outweighed by the benefits to the donor and recipient. The long-term risks to the donor are however uncertain. This is an international prospective cohort study of 310 donors and 310 non-donors, including the recruitment of 85 donors and 85 non-donors in Australia. We will determine the long term risks on a kidney donor of a series of physical and psychological health outcomes.

Tropical diseases create a significant human and economic burden worldwide - particularly in resource-poor settings. Around half of the world's population is at risk of malaria. In Australia, Streptococcal and parasitic worm infections are particularly common in indigenous communities. This Program brings together leading experts to tackle these major health challenges. They are investigating how the body reacts to infection and creating new drugs and vaccines to eradicate these diseases.
Playful engagement and dementia: understanding the efficacy of applied theatre practices for people with dementia in residential aged care facilities. In the absence of a cure for dementia, there is an increasing recognition of the need to address its key impacts of social isolation, depressed mood and quality of life. This project will make use of a range of theatre techniques to develop improvised interactions and playful connections with the person with dementia.

How Should Moderate Iron Overload In Haemochromatosis Be Managed?

Summary
My PhD studies hereditary haemochromatosis which causes iron accumulation in the body which can be treated by removing blood. Whilst those with very high iron levels require treatment, it is not clear if those with only moderately raised iron also need treatment. If this study shows there is no difference in outcomes between the groups treatment to normalise body iron versus those who do not normalise body iron, this will change current practice.
This proposal aims to examine how the oral bacterial pathogen, P.gingivalis, interacts with the host to worsen the severity of disease in rheumatoid arthritis. We propose a new mechanism whereby the pathogen directly activates a major destructive host pathway to promote tissue and bone destruction, which are two of the clinical hallmarks of rheumatoid arthritis. We also propose that this host-pathogen interaction occurs in periodontal disease.

Calcitonin is a hormone whose main action has long been regarded as the slowing down of bone breakdown, however, its importance in human physiology is unknown. The aim of this study is to understand the role of calcitonin in regulating bone formation and protecting the skeleton in times of calcium stress, such as lactation. These results will greatly advance our understanding of the control of bone and calcium homeostasis, which will have implications for the treatment of bone disorders.
