    Summary
    Evolution of immunoregulatory networks: preventing autoimmunity at the expense of perpetuating chronicity in persistent infections. Chronic pathogens like HIV take advantage of human genes that regulate immune responses, which evolved to prevent autoimmunity, enabling them to evade eradication. This project defines the nature and interplays between these genes and will provide valuable clues as to how immunity can be manipulated to promote clearance of persistent infections.

Australia is pre-eminent in malaria research, making lead discoveries in vaccine and drug development. However, we lack crucial resources to study the parasite in the mo .... Australian security and aid personnel deployed in the Region contract malaria infections and global warming could bring malaria-carrying mosquitoes south to Sydney. Australia is pre-eminent in malaria research, making lead discoveries in vaccine and drug development. However, we lack crucial resources to study the parasite in the mosquito phase of its life cycle. The Federation Fellowship will create a malaria mosquito facility to redress this crucial gap in our capability. The Fellowship will double as foreign aid investment by enhancing our capacity to protect ourselves as well as supporting our neighbours.

Essential genes are potentially excellent targets for anti-malarial drugs. This project will use a novel strategy to identify genes that the parasite cannot exist without. This project aims to better understand the maintenance and acquisition of immunity to malaria in high risk groups. It will also attempt to elucidate how immunity can interfere with the therapeutic efficacy of antimalarials, especially in the assessment of emerging drug resistance. The over-riding hypothesis is that differences in malaria transmission will lead to differential acquisition of immunity .... Immuno-epidemiological insights into the development of immunity to malaria and drug resistance. This project aims to better understand the maintenance and acquisition of immunity to malaria in high risk groups. It will also attempt to elucidate how immunity can interfere with the therapeutic efficacy of antimalarials, especially in the assessment of emerging drug resistance. The over-riding hypothesis is that differences in malaria transmission will lead to differential acquisition of immunity and efficacy of malaria interventions within and between populations. Understanding immunity to malaria is pivotal to develop new interventions, to understand the effectiveness of current malaria treatment and control programs to reduce the global burden of malarial disease.
