It focuses in particular on conflict between different practices of reading in order to highlight the cultural assumptions underlying the uses of texts.

This project aims to investigate the history of middlebrow cultural values and institutions in 20th-century Australia. It will be the first such study, and will build on recent major international work on the middlebrow. Nineteenth-century Britain witnessed a crucial episode in this history, when air became central to art and science, and culture was reconceived as climatic. This new link between culture and climate allowed social changes to be seen as having climatic effects.

This project addresses a fundamental question in current debates over nationhood - on what ideological and discursive bases nations are formed - by studying the roots of modern national consciousness in early modern France. It will examine the survival, indeed the reinforcement of particularist ideas about the French people and France within the universalist context of Enlightenment thought.
