This reflexive ethnographic and co-design project aims to examine how patient and family participation occurs with health professionals in using the electronic medical record within hospitals, especially for patients with complex needs. Its significance involves working with patients and families to consider how they could take part in decision making activities across transitions of care and influence health care activities. Outcomes are new knowledge and practices about how communication occurs with the electronic medical record and strategies adopted for effective engagement. Benefits are increased understanding of how and under what circumstances, engagement can take place in using the electronic medical record.Read moreRead less

Australia is the first country to launch digital TV nationally. Increasingly, this platform will be used for consuming multimedia information; also the HDTV infrastructure is being applied to other domains such as telemedicine/e-Health to lower costs and improve effectiveness. For Australia to be a step ahead in the development of these applications that are beneficial to a wider community, we have to look forward and establish adequate infrastructure for the development of needed applications of the future. It is strongly believed that by doing so we can position ourselves ahead of other communities in anticipating and providing essential services to our modern society and this in turn will greatly benefit the Australian economy.Read moreRead less
Studying 'research' in Australia’s library and information profession. With over 111 million annual visits, libraries are fundamental to Australia's social fabric and increasingly to its success as a national economy. With over 111 million annual visits, libraries are fundamental to Australia's social fabric and increasingly to its success as a national economy. In the current volatile economic climate Australia's libraries are being called upon to do more with less. This project aims to help Australia's libraries to contribute in a more powerful way to national productivity by helping library and information professionals make tough decisions in an environment where there is competition for limited resources. This project aims, for the first time, build an evidence base on research in Australia's library and information profession. It will establish a framework that can be used by library and information professionals to build a research culture that enables the adoption of "practitioner-researcher" as an approach to professional practice.Read moreRead less
Efficient Techniques for Mining Exceptional Patterns. This research will develop totally new techniques for exceptional pattern discovery that are useful for deeper understanding data mining and capturing the hidden interactions (class-bridge rules and out-expectation patterns) within data. This will enable Australian data marketers to access valuable implicit information that is contained in their data, but not currently accessible. The outcomes will keep Australia in the international leading ....Efficient Techniques for Mining Exceptional Patterns. The outcomes will keep Australia in the international leading edge and preserve its competitive status in preemptively defining the information market of tomorrow. To 'Frontier Technologies for Building and Transforming Australian Industries', discovering new exceptional patterns within data will lead to increased efficiency in Australian Industries.Read moreRead less
Content-based image retrieval using interactive feedback. Storage and retrieval of visual information plays an important role in multimedia systems. We aim to develop a method to retrieve images and visual information from multimedia databases and multimedia systems. The method will go beyond simple similarity search to retrieval data on knowledge by accommodating knowledge acquisition and sequential learning techniques, and will be able to handle complex queries with partial information. The technology developed will find many applications in the multimedia area such as education, medical imaging, desktop publishing, advertising, business presentation, and engineering design.Read moreRead less
Concept learning and Structure Formation for Document Navigation. This proposal is motivated by its interest in document retrieval and
discovery using formal concept analysis. The hypothesis to be tested
is that logical structures can be automatically inferred from
a document collection using information inference and
concept learning.
Efficient Strategies for Mining Negative Association Rules. Negative association rules (NAR) catch mutually-exclusive correlations

rules (TAR) do. For example, in stock market surveillance based on alert logs, NARs detect which alerts are false. There are essential differences between mining TARs and NARs because NARs are hidden in infrequent itemsets. This research will develop efficient strategies for mining NARs in databases. These strategies are expected to be about ten times faster than existing ones. This project will deliver database-independent and high-performance mining algorithms for decision-making. The results can benefit Australian marketing and financial companies as well as health and security departments for smart information use.Read moreRead less

This project aims to determine the best ways to communicate wine research and to design tools to support research adoption. Adoption of research relies on effective use of information and technology by employees. Research into employees’ information practices in the workplace has been conducted in health care, education and other areas; however, the wine industry’s use of information and technology for adoption is unexplored. The project plans to assess the strategies used to share research with winemakers and grape growers (e.g. seminars, websites, social media), from information behaviour or web useability perspectives, to ensure industry needs are met appropriately. This research aims to have a direct and immediate impact on the wine industry. In addition to the immediate impact of new research innovations that will be implemented by our partner wine companies, the project will also change industry-wide approaches to extension. The partner organisations use extension strategies to showcase new innovations and our research will assess these organisations’ current practices, providing evidence to shape the design of future activities in Australia.Read moreRead less
