Affirmative action policies traditionally favour members of disadvantaged groups in labour markets such as women, elderly, and non-white. They are widely implemented internationally in employment, contracting, and education often despite a lack of knowledge about societal impacts. This project aims to use both field and laboratory experiments to study how individuals react to affirmative action and investigate sabotage, ....Affirmative action & its unintended effects: an experimental investigation. Affirmative action policies traditionally favour members of disadvantaged groups in labour markets such as women, elderly, and non-white. They are widely implemented internationally in employment, contracting, and education often despite a lack of knowledge about societal impacts. This project aims to use both field and laboratory experiments to study how individuals react to affirmative action and investigate sabotage, cooperation, and competition between disadvantaged and advantaged groups. The main hypothesis is that affirmative action can increase sabotage, harm cooperation and push competition in ways that endanger the well functioning of labour markets. This project aims to identify policies in which the fostering of non-cognitive skills (NCS) can break the persistence of economic disadvantage. The project seeks to investigate the mechanisms behind differential development, intergenerational transmission of NCS between "rich and poor," how exposure to economic stress inhibits NCS development and the role of schooling in boosting NCS of disadvantaged children. It focuses on large life decisions such as going into retirement, paying for a university education and buying a house. The project also assess the extent to which people are able to make these predictions accurately.
Developing sustainable retirement policy in a Chinese province: the case of Zhejiang. Much Chinese national policy has its origins in provincial initiatives, and this is especially true of retirement policy, where information about individuals is held by provinces. This project examines Zhejiang Province, one of the most innovative in policy. It promises to yield rich insights into retirement policy formulation in China.
Bayesian analysis of individual decisions in health and labour economics. This project aims to exploit emerging Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo methods to develop new approaches to modelling economic decision making. These methods will generate insights into two current and important policy debates. This includes (i) marijuana, alcohol and tobacco use and legalisation of marijuana use; and (ii) parental leave policies, maternity leave decisions and mothers' labour market dynamics.
