Particulate and multiphase processes are widely used in both conventional and modern industries in Australia and worldwide, however rarely reach more than 60% of design capacity because of a poor understanding of their fundamental characteristics. This frontier technology research program aims to overcome this problem using an extensive combined fundamental and applied approach. The resulting theories, computer models and simulation techniques will be applied to improve process design, control and optimisation. Consequentially, productivity and Australian competitiveness will be significantly enhanced in its most important industries such as minerals, metallurgical, chemical, energy, pharmaceutical and materials.Read moreRead less
Anisotropic behaviour of coal for coalbed methane recovery and CO2 geosequestration. Amongst the cheapest and safest options for clean energy are to use natural gas from coal seams for electricity and fuel production and then permanently store carbon dioxide within the depleted seams. This requires information about the underground behaviour of coal at a level of detail which is not available. In particular, the directional and dynamic response of coal to changes in pressure, stress and gas in ....Anisotropic behaviour of coal for coalbed methane recovery and CO2 geosequestration. Amongst the cheapest and safest options for clean energy are to use natural gas from coal seams for electricity and fuel production and then permanently store carbon dioxide within the depleted seams. This requires information about the underground behaviour of coal at a level of detail which is not available. In particular, the directional and dynamic response of coal to changes in pressure, stress and gas interactions is required, which is the subject of this project. Coal bed methane is rapidly growing into a multi-billion dollar industry for Australia. The geosequestration of carbon dioxide in deep coal is widely recognised presenting a secure and economical opportunity for greenhouse gas control. Read moreRead less
Extending the range of the flotation process for particle separation. The minerals industry is a significant contributor to Australia's prosperity. Flotation is an important process for upgrading low-grade ores to high-grade concentrates, and for recovering fine coal from tailings. This project is aimed at solving a long-term problem in current flotation practice, the difficulty in recovering ultrafine and coarse particles, currently lost from production. We will pursue two new discoveries recen ....Extending the range of the flotation process for particle separation. We will pursue two new discoveries recently made by us, relating to the recovery of ultrafines and coarse particles. Benefits to Australia are of the order of $500 million a year in increased exports, education of high-quality graduates, export income from license fees and equipment.Read moreRead less

This proposal seeks to establish a state-of-the-art facility for interfacial rheology analysis. The proposed facility will be unique in Australia and bring together leading researchers from the Universities of Newcastle, Melbourne and South Australia. The facility will allow direct measurements of physical properties at fluid-liquid interfaces which are needed for ongoing research in froth flotation, food processing and surfactant applications as well as to develop new processes in emerging fields of nanotechnology, biotechnology, and medical and pharmaceutical production.Read moreRead less
