This project aims to enhance discovery, productivity and translation within and between disciplines in Australian research through better utilisation of big data. Advances in our ability to capture, store, process and analyse large data sets are transforming many parts of society, including the research sector. Machine learning, for example, will allow data-driven analysis of massive, unstructured data sets such as social media archives or financial records in ways that will shed new light on many complex research questions. This project will map existing capability and infrastructure within and across disciplines, identify common and discipline-specific practices, challenges and opportunities, and assess technology, infrastructure, training and collaboration priorities for Australia.

Designing for scale: understanding the value of information and communication technologies for individuals, communities and movements. This project will build an understanding of how we can design information systems to have a positive, significant impact at different human scales: individual, community and society at large. Using software that advises individuals on how much water to use in their gardens, the project will question how this vehicle can effect large-scale change in our communitie ....Designing for scale: understanding the value of information and communication technologies for individuals, communities and movements. Modern Australian law is very heavily based on legislation, and the amount and complexity of legislation increases every year, particularly delegated legislation. It is essential that legislation be interpreted and applied accurately and efficiently for Australia to have high quality legal research, for the operation of the rule of law, and for the effective operation of the legal system. This project will contribute to all of these national benefits by providing free access for all Australian legal researchers and lawyers to a comprehensive national collection of legislation which meets international best practice standards, includes delegated legislation, and integrates all legislation-related materials.Read moreRead less

Conceptualizing and Measuring Digital Service Quality. The project aims to understand customer quality perceptions of digital services, and the factors, such as customer's own skill-levels, that help people to optimise their experiences. The project aims to understand customer quality perceptions of digital services, and the factors, such as customer's own skill-levels, that help people to optimise their experiences. Public and private organisations are pushing customers from face-to-face to digital service and self-service models, sometimes offering no alternatives (eg many travel visas can only be obtained online). E-commerce research suggests up to 80 per cent of service users will sometimes struggle with online transactions. In the worst case, people may be excluded from accessing important services. Insights from this research are expected to help public and private organisations to deliver high-quality digital services that empower service users.Read moreRead less
The Open Innovation Process: Factors and Technologies that Matter. This project aims to identify approaches to enable firms to find and introduce ideas through open innovation. This project aims to identify approaches to enable firms to find and introduce ideas through open innovation. Open innovation, with its focus on external sources of ideas, is a promising approach for increasing organisational innovation. While uptake of open innovation is on the increase, the lack of understanding of practices and technologies used to successfully introduce it into firms, limits its usefulness and results in wasted resources. This project aims to investigate open innovation and relevant technologies to identify success factors for the idea generation and assessment phases of open innovation, develop guidelines for their application, identify effective technologies and related recommendations for use, and quantify their impact on innovation.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop fundamental theory and enabling technology for a novel radio remote sensing system using a breakthrough synthetic aperture radio holography concept. Such a system would leapfrog current capabilities to produce high-resolution, day-and-night and weather-independent 3-D images for many applications (eg geoscience and climate change research, environmental and agricultural monitoring, defence and security-related target detection, and planetary exploration). Expected project outcomes include advanced sensing and data processing knowledge and a prototype demonstrating the developed analogue and digital hardware.Read moreRead less
