The ARC Network in Imaging Science and Technology is a field of research network covering the fundamental science and technological development of applied imaging systems. The network will encompass all aspects of the imaging sciences from image formation, through image processing and analysis, and on to image visualisation. In particular, the network will focus on a number of application areas that utilise these core technologies: medical imaging; surveillance and security; materials science and metallurgy; environmental monitoring; and consumer imaging. In this way, the network will provide an environment for creative inter-disciplinary research to the socio-economic benefit of Australia.

Left-handed metamaterials and negative refraction. This project will establish and support the first team in Australia working in the field of left-handed metamaterials, artificial materials in which waves behave in a unique and counter-intuitive way. This project will establish and support the first team in Australia working in the field of left-handed metamaterials, artificial materials in which waves behave in a unique and counter-intuitive way. The project will promote this new field, enhance its rapid development, and facilitate emerging novel technologies in Australia. It will also lead to close international collaborations with active theoretical and experimental groups, and bring important expertise to Australia. We believe our initial efforts of purely fundamental nature and extensive collaboration with the overseas groups will have a significant impact on the development of this field and related novel technologies in Australia, attracting strong interest from industry.

Exploring the last frontier: cosmic reionization and the first galaxies. This program will help to position Australia as a leader in the development of the Square Kilometre Array, a 1.5 billion Euro radio telescope that Australia is vying to host. Exploring the last frontier: cosmic reionization and the first galaxies. This program will help to position Australia as a leader in the development of the Square Kilometre Array, a 1.5 billion Euro radio telescope that Australia is vying to host. The program takes advantage of the uniquely radio quiet environment of Western Australia to achieve unprecedented measurements of the 'first light fossils' in the Universe, which reside in the portion of the radio spectrum that is filled by FM radio transmissions in most parts of the planet. This ground-breaking research program will provide training for the next generation of world-class scientists and add to the already high profile of Australian astrophysics.

The Southern Sky Survey. The Southern Sky Survey will create the first digital map of the southern sky, providing a community available database of a billion objects. This database will be used by entire community, with our group targetting four key areas including: studying the creation of our solar system through a census of distant asteroids, exploring how stars and planets form by observing nearby young stars, probing the shape and extent of the Galaxy's dark matter halo, and discovering whe .... This data set will also be used as a staging ground for a Virtual Observatory.

A clearer view of the evolving universe. The two complementary research objectives of this proposal are (i) a basic research program to understand star formation in galaxies through a study of the correlation betwen far infrared and radio continuum emission and (ii) a strategic research program to develop interference mitigation techniques to enable the next generation of radio telescopes which will study star formation in the early Universe. This programme of research innovation in radio astronomy will also promote the broad aims of furthering opportunities for Australian participation in international science and of gaining insight into ways in which Australia can exploit its niche advantages in the global economy.
