This fibre-classing process is subjective and heavily dependent on the experience of the classers. In this project, we will objectively measure wool fibre diameter by extracting features used by human woolclassers and by combining image processing and artificial intelligence. The fractal dimension calculated by fractal based texture analysis will be correlated to fibre diameter. This approach will provide an insight into an on farm and/or in shed objective measurement of wool fibre diameter.Read moreRead less

This project will develop an improved breast cancer computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system that incorporates mammography, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging. This system will be based on recently developed deep learning techniques, which have the capacity to process multi-modal data in a unified and optimal manner. The advantage of this technique is that it is able to automatically learn both the relevant features to analyse in each modality and the hidden relationships between them. The use of deep belief networks has produced promising results in several fields, such as speech recognition, and so this project believes that our approach has the potential to improve both the sensitivity and specificity of breast cancer detection.Read moreRead less
Computer vision from a multi-structural analysis framework. Computer vision has applications in a wide variety of areas: security (video surveillance), entertainment (special effects), health care (medical imaging), and economy (improved automation and consumer products). This project will improve the accuracy and reliability of such applications. Advances will also lead to new products and industries.
Improved image analysis: maximised statistical use of geometry/shape constraints. This project will improve image analysis to apply such applications as 3D street-scape reconstruction, synthetic inserts into video for special effects, autonomous navigation, and scene understanding. It will do so by maximally exploiting the geometry of planar surfaces (e.g. walls) and straight lines and other simple geometric shapes.
Low Power Architectures for the Wavelet Transform and JPEG2000. Recently a new international standard for image compression has been proposed, JPEG2000. This new method updates the well established JPEG standard and will be incorporated into digital cameras, web pads, etc.
In this project we will investigate low power architectures for the wavelet transforms used in this standard, and combine this with an embedded processor core to deliver a complete system on a chip solution for low power JPEG ....Low Power Architectures for the Wavelet Transform and JPEG2000.
