Summary
Inventing the international - the origins of globalisation. This project will position Australia as a leader in research that explicates the historical legacy of internationalism in the early twenty-first century. This project intends to provide a genealogy of how, in the years after 1815, economics and politics intersected historically to make the modern global world.
Mrs O'Keefe and the battle for white Australia: The O'Keefe Deportation Case of 1949 and the unravelling of the White Australia Policy. The purpose of this project is to better understand the decline of the White Australia Policy by providing the first detailed examination of the policy in the 1940s. The resulting book will provide a timely examination of themes such as border protection, refugees, race and immigration policy.
Pursuing Public Health in The Preindustrial World, 1100-1800. This project aims to recover community-health practices in three world regions before the takeoff of European industrialization. It challenges a common chronology and geography in public health history by examining how especially non-urban societies in Europe, the Middle East and India adjusted their behaviors and environments to manage health risks, often relying on the principles of humoral (or Galenic) medicine. Summary
Slow catastrophes: drought resilience amongst farmers and agricultural communities in south eastern Australia, 1880s-2000s. Drought is a profound shaper of rural society. This project will explore the way rural Australians have adapted to, and survived, drought in Australian history. Understanding human resilience in drought in the past will contribute to developing strategies for coping with drought and global climate change in the future.
Culture-bound syndromes, koro, and the emergence of 'cosmopolitan' psychiatry. This historical study examines the concepts of ethnicity used by psychiatrists by focusing on the ways in which one culture-bound syndrome, koro, moved from being exclusively South-East Asian to being found in a number of cultures. It will develop significant understandings of psychiatric conceptions of cultural difference.
Beyond Empire: Transnational religious networks and liberal cosmopolitanisms. This project aims to study religion as a dimension of international affairs between 1860 and 1950. It will examine the contribution of faith-based activity, networking and thought to global governance and peace building institutionalised in the United Nations, universal human rights and humanitarianism that shaped the second half of the twentieth century. Tracking the development of agricultural lifestyles in island Southeast Asia through modern and prehistoric rodent communities. The emergence of agriculture, a key transformational event in human history, seems to have occurred significantly later in island SE Asia than surrounding regions. However, the early stages of agriculture may be archaeologically ‘invisible’ in the tropics due to simple material culture and housing. This project proposes to use the recent evolutionary history of agricult ....Tracking the development of agricultural lifestyles in island Southeast Asia through modern and prehistoric rodent communities. The emergence of agriculture, a key transformational event in human history, seems to have occurred significantly later in island SE Asia than surrounding regions. However, the early stages of agriculture may be archaeologically ‘invisible’ in the tropics due to simple material culture and housing. This project proposes to use the recent evolutionary history of agricultural rodent pests, all of which emerged in situ from among a native rodent fauna, as a proxy for the origins and spread of agriculture, and its subsequent intensification. This project will use phylogeography and population genetics to infer the history of contemporary rodent populations, combined with archaeozoological and ancient DNA analyses of prehistoric samples to test our inferences.Read moreRead less
Banishing potentates: European colonialists and indigenous rulers in the British and French overseas empires. French and British colonial authorities often banished indigenous rulers in Asia and Africa who resisted foreign overlordship. This project studies the circumstances of their deposition and exile, the fate of exiled rulers and their entourages, and the place of banished 'potentates' in metropolitan and nationalist historiography.
