The Initiative will survey the volume, range, impact, and international status of Asian area research in Australia, identify themes with high potential for achieving significant outcomes through transnational research and research-training, and develop a strategy for maximizing national research capacity in targeted areas through a national inter-disciplinary network for Asia-area research - Network Asia.
Outcomes include a published report on the state of the field and a strategic plan for a viable and sustainable research network.

This project will benefit the nation by demonstrating the critical importance of the Australian media and its reporting of international news in our foreign relations and, more broadly, in shaping our understanding of, and engagement with, the rest of the world. It will contribute to the research priority of strengthening our understanding of Australia's place in the region and the world. Discipline and morale are key elements in combat performance, particularly in Low-Intensity Conflict (LIC). This project examines the relationships between discipline, morale and combat performance using the Australian Army in Vietnam as a case study. It provides insights into better understanding and managing discipline and morale to produce and sustain combat performance. It assists the Army to avoid the negative effects of failures in discipline and morale that produced the My Lai massacre and the Abu Ghraib fiasco. It also helps position Australia internationally as a contributor to the better understanding of LIC, and fills a gap in Australian historiography of war.Read moreRead less
Understanding Low-Intensity Conflict. Since 1945, Low-Intensity Conflict (LIC) has become the dominant form of warfare. Conventional armies have a poor record of success in fighting LIC. This project uses the records of the Australian Army's operations in the Vietnam War to better understand it's operational performance there and to unearth insights into the conduct of LIC. The project has the potential to reduce casualties, both military and civilian, and assist the Army in selecting new war-fi ....Understanding Low-Intensity Conflict. Wild Man from Borneo: species, race, representation. This project addresses the representation of species boundaries in Western accounts of the orangutan in the 19th and 20th centuries. Darwinian theory raised the possibility that animals could ?evolve?. Orangutans seemed ?closest? to humans and therefore raised key questions about the border between humans and animals. These questions were addressed in a vast range of scientific, popular, imaginative and juvenile literature. Even when ecolo ....Wild Man from Borneo: species, race, representation. Its focus is on the changing political economy of overseas news production, including the role of international news agencies, between 1860 and 1910. It analyses technological, economic, political and cultural factors affecting overseas news availability and the extent and forms of its publication in Australian newspape ....Overseas news in the press in Australia and its conditions of production: 1860-1910. This project is the first major historical study of overseas news in the press in Australia. Its focus is on the changing political economy of overseas news production, including the role of international news agencies, between 1860 and 1910. It analyses technological, economic, political and cultural factors affecting overseas news availability and the extent and forms of its publication in Australian newspapers. The project is an extended case study of the interaction of global and local factors in a key area of cultural production. This project innovatively combines an analysis of past and contemporary configurations of gender and sexuality across the Pacific, using historical and ethnographic methods to address interconnected questions about women, men and transgendered persons. It situates dynamic transformations of gender and sexuality in cross-cultural encounters wherein indigenous and exogenous patterns creatively combined. It focuses successively on four epochs and processes: the Cook voyages in the late eighteenth century; Christian conversion from the nineteenth century and the changing fabric of femininities; parallel transformations of masculinities with Christian conversion and male migrant labour and contemporary reconfigurations of gender liminality in relation to homosexuality.Read moreRead less
