This reflexive ethnographic and co-design project aims to examine how patient and family participation occurs with health professionals in using the electronic medical record within hospitals, especially for patients with complex needs. Its significance involves working with patients and families to consider how they could take part in decision making activities across transitions of care and influence health care activities. Outcomes are new knowledge and practices about how communication occurs with the electronic medical record and strategies adopted for effective engagement. Benefits are increased understanding of how and under what circumstances, engagement can take place in using the electronic medical record.Read moreRead less
The effect of genomic variants on Indigenous health. The effect of genomic variants on Indigenous health. This project aims to examine the genetic variants introduced by Europeans (and other groups) into the genomes of the Aboriginal Australian population. The rate of metabolic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension is very high in Australia’s Indigenous populations. While an energy-rich Western diet has been suggested as the major cause, the contribution of genomic variants (mutations) rema ....The effect of genomic variants on Indigenous health. While an energy-rich Western diet has been suggested as the major cause, the contribution of genomic variants (mutations) remains unclear. Anticipated outcomes are better understandings of both the benign and deleterious variants introduced into Aboriginal Australian populations and how these contribute to disease susceptibility.Read moreRead less
Trails of migration out of Africa in harmful mutations of the First Peoples. This project aims to study harmful mutations specific to Indigenous populations. The process of migration out of Africa has left its footprints in the mutations present in world populations. By investigating these unique signatures, this project aims to characterise the harmful mutations specific to Aboriginal Australians using the whole genome sequences of the First Peoples. The expected outcomes will benefit future ....Trails of migration out of Africa in harmful mutations of the First Peoples. Understanding health information literacy in Australia's ageing population: A qualitative study. Australians need to know how to find and use information to help them age well. This research will establish a national Health Information Literacy Framework that will be an evidence-based guide for community agencies to use in creating resources and services to support the information needs of ageing Australians. Ageing Australians who are healthy and active are able to participate in the workforce, ....Understanding health information literacy in Australia's ageing population: A qualitative study. Australians need to know how to find and use information to help them age well. This research will establish a national Health Information Literacy Framework that will be an evidence-based guide for community agencies to use in creating resources and services to support the information needs of ageing Australians. Ageing Australians who are healthy and active are able to participate in the workforce, engage in the community while easing the burden on the national health care system. The research will place Australia at the forefront of health prevention and information literacy research. The research will be undertaken as a partnership between QUT, Griffith University and the Health Contact Centre. Read moreRead less
Enhancing and supporting deliberations within multidisciplinary decision teams. A group’s knowledge and reasoning processes are rarely conducted or recorded systematically; a problem particularly pressing for medical decisions made by multidisciplinary teams. A group’s knowledge and reasoning processes are rarely conducted or recorded systematically; a problem particularly pressing for medical decisions made by multidisciplinary teams. This project will perform the first integration of knowledge management principles with group reasoning process models to create an online environment for enhancing the quality of group decisions and their documentation. The online environment will help medical teams use documented and non-documented knowledge when more than one medical condition is present and no formal guidelines are applicable. The project advances theories of knowledge in groups and is extendable to any deliberations on complex problems.Read moreRead less
Can technology make communication in complex systems safer and more efficient? Evaluation of an electronic test management system in health care. In many industries poor communication has a major impact on safety; in health, missed test results have impacts ranging from inappropriate antibiotic therapy to missed cancer diagnoses. This research will evaluate new information technology which can improve health outcomes and communication between clinicians, laboratories and patients.

Summary
Health research seeks to benefit society by improving health. However, there is a gap between the findings of research and healthcare practice. New systems are beginning to change the way research data are used to improve health outcomes. I am an HIV specialist developing and evaluating several new data systems and my vision for the next four years is to use these to improve the translation of health research into practice and policy for the benefit of people with HIV and society at large.

Development of an evaluation model for assessing the effectiveness of ICT to integrate services and improve service performance and client experience. This research will deliver a new evaluation model for assessing how best to use information technology in service organisations to improve service co-ordination, performance and clients’ experiences. It focuses on information technology use in the aged and community care sector which is critically in need of these benefits.

This project intends to develop next-generation machine-learning methods to cope with the growing data deluge. Modern data analytics tasks need to interpret and derive values from complex, growing data. Intended outcomes of the project include new Bayesian nonparametric methods that can express arbitrary dependency amongst multiple, heterogeneous data sources with infinite model complexity, together with algorithms to perform inference and deduce knowledge from them; new Bayesian statistical inference for set-valued random variables that moves beyond vectors and matrices to enrich our analytics toolbox to deal with sets; and a new deterministic fast inference to meet with real-world demand.Read moreRead less
