A comparative genomics approach to understanding host-endosymbiont interactions. Australia's unique ecosystems are vulnerable to invasion by exotic pests that threaten agriculture and human health. The bacterial symbiont Wolbachia is found in many major pests of agricultural and medical importance. Summary
Hereditary haemochromatosis (HH) is a disorder characterised by excessive iron absorption and build up of iron in body organs such as the liver. The excess iron can be toxic and cause disease. Most HH is caused by mutations in the HFE gene. Other forms are caused by mutations in other genes. This project will characterise a new form of HH that is unrelated to any of the previously known genes. The project aims to find the gene for this new condition by genetic analysis in a large family.

Our studies would emphasise that adverse events during pregnancy can have long-term health implications, with concomitant social and economic consequences. In America, the prevalence of foetal alcohol syndrome is comparable with rates for Down syndrome. The burden of common complex diseases, such as cardiovascular disease is substantial to the health care system. These diseases are caused by genes and environments as well as their interactions. The proposed project will identify genes affecting the susceptibility of individuals to complex diseases. Discovery of such genes will be important for their diagnosis, prevention and treatment and may serve as an important resource for future personalized medicine.

This project has the capacity to transform our understanding of the evolution, development and genetic variation of complex organisms, as well as the self-organization of complex systems in general.
