What are the chances that the losses in the market value of investments exceed the anticipated levels? Given that one country's financial market collapsed, what are the chances that it would lead to financial crises in other countries? These questions often arise in risk management and international finance. This project takes a significant step forward from the existing literature to develop new flexible and innovative methods to answer the foregoing type of questions. Further, this project proposes new measures of market risks that are suitable for communicating to the broader public as well as the experts.

When Markets Fail: A Comparative Assessment of Costs and Benefits of Trade Interruption. Stock exchanges worldwide provide the opportunity to instantaneously and continuously trade securities. The introduction of automated trading systems has considerably enhanced this opportunity. Surprisingly, exchanges still have (and use) the discretion to occasionally suspend trading in certain stocks. These trading halts are used to prevent a disorderly or uninformed response to pertinent company information releases. Practitioners and academics tend to believe that trading halts do not serve this role well. We propose a new methodology to more accurately measure the costs and benefits of trade suspensions. We compare their impact on different trading systems, and evaluate their intertemporal performance.

The aims of this project are twofold; to assess (i) what level of transparency is optimal and (ii) whether off-market block trading should be allowed in futures markets. Transparency refers to how much of the trading process is made visible to participants. The issue has been researched only very recently and findings have been limited. Off-market block trading procedures allow large trades to be executed away from the market. This project will undertake the first study of large trades on futures markets and will also compare the impact of large trades on market quality when executed on- and off-market.

This project examines the information content of dividend changes and repurchase programs and the long-term market impact of these announcements, controlling for the substitution effect of repurchases/dividends in different institutional/tax regimes. This project also examines whether short sellers manifest abnormal behaviour around the announcement of dividend changes and repurchase programs, and whether earnings are manipulated upwards to maintain the dividend or downwards prior to the announcement of repurchase programs. The findings will be of major interest to academics, managers, investors and regulators.

These programs are aimed at ensuring that the firm maintains an optimal capital structure. This is often done according to rules of thumb or benchmarked against a few financial ratios. To the extent that more rigor can be introduced into the analysis of optimal capital structure, there is a clear benefit to Australian firms. Of course, the reason firms engage in capital management initiatives in the first place is to lower their cost of capital and to increase value. Any initiative that lowers the cost of capital of Australian firms will result in increased productivity and economic growth.

Quantification issues in corporate valuation, the cost of capital, and optimal capital structure. An estimate of the firm's cost of capital is probably the most important calculation required in corporate finance. It is used as the discount rate in valuation and capital budgeting decisions and forms the basis of pricing structures for many regulated industries. Corporate finance theory has identified the key inputs used to calculate the cost of capital, but the current literature falls short of precisely quantifying and measuring many of these inputs. The outcomes from this project will be a framework to quantify three key aspects of the cost of capital - the value of dividend imputation tax credits, the assessment of the optimal capital structure for the firm (in particular, the quantification of bankruptcy and agency costs associated with debt financing), and the estimation of the firm's marginal tax rate.

Attention to Australia, the US and Asia means that the research will be directly relevant to Australian decision-makers. Further, the project will yield papers for publication in top international journals, reinforcing Australia's reputation as a leading centre for financial research and enhance it's reputation for cutting-edge work.

These outcomes will benefit researchers both in academia and in Australian financial institutions as research into credit risk has been active in recent years, due to the impending adoption by financial institutions of the Basel II accord on risk assessment. The outcomes will provide a strong academic methodology applied to credit default risk by Australian financial institutions and the Australian financial regulator. This research has the potential to enhance the competitivemess of Australia's financial sector.

Recent bubbles in financial markets and other anxieties with regard to whether financial assets are correctly valued have led to a reduction in the confidence in financial markets. This study, by focussing upon potential biases in the price formation process, will provide strong insights into this important topic. In covering three major equity markets, the project will provide important guidance for the design of regulatory policies on corporate disclosure by both Governments and Stock Exchanges. Given the increased need for funded superannuation/pension schemes, an increase in the confidence in capital market processes will benefit the development of successful funded schemes.

The Role of Corporate Governance Mechanisms in Maximising the Performance of Listed Australian Corporations. The recent spake of corporate collapses and scandals highlights the need for an ongoing commitment to the development, implementation and maintenance of strong systems of governance within Australian corporations. This commitment necessitates an understanding of which suite of governance mechanisms are most effective in positively impacting upon corporate performance rather than just the performance impact of a particular mechanism in isolation. To date, research facilitating such an understanding is all but non-existent. However, our study will yield this much-needed evidence and, therefore, provide the foundations for ongoing corporate governance reform on the part of regulators and practitioners alike.
