Improving the quality of teaching in higher education is an important priority for Australian universities. There has been rapid growth in the number of training programs for university teachers. This study will directly support these efforts. It will investigate the effectiveness of the diverse approaches to teaching and learning traditionally adopted within different fields of study?across the sciences, the arts, the humanities and the professions. The findings will be used to develop new training programs for university teachers that are tailored towards best practice in the particular areas of knowledge in which staff are teaching. Enhanced training of university teachers will lead to better teaching and better student outcomes.Read moreRead less

This research will produce new knowledge, strategies, models and recommendations that will help to keep early career teachers in the profession in regional, rural and remote areas. In doing so it will address the problem of teacher shortage that is currently threatening the nation's educational, economic and social outcomes. The research outcomes will have particular credibility at the national level because they will be the result of dialogue and collaboration across three universities and six industry partners who are the key stakeholders in teacher employment in two states. In addition, the collaborative approach will facilitate implementation of recommendations at the local, state and national levels.Read moreRead less
Healthier and sustainable futures for disadvantaged young people. The economic health and social costs to the Australian community of young people who disengage from post-secondary education and employment are immense. The economic health and social costs to the Australian community of young people who disengage from post-secondary education and employment are immense. Development of National, State and local policy, programs and services for these young people is significantly hampered by a widely acknowledged lack of evidence about disadvantaged young peoples post-compulsory education and employment pathways. This research will establish an evidence base that will inform the development of targeted cross-sectoral government policy and programmatic responses to these young people, improve delivery of relevant health, welfare and education services, thereby enabling disadvantaged young people to create healthier, economically sustainable futures. A framework of information and communication technolgy (ICT) types and uses relating to accessibility problems caused by illness and recuperation will be developed. Working with 30 secondary students from a major children's hospital, teachers and hospital educators, the researchers will develop, implement and evaluate communications strategies, support structures and continuing professional development programs for effective elearning. Outcomes will aid students whose education is disrupted through illness and absence, with consequential benefits to them, the community and nation. This project focuses on students absent due to illness or accident, but has potential benefit for other students absent from school for extended periods.Read moreRead less
The Social and Economic Security of International Students in the Global Education Market. Social and economic security is a prime factor in decisions by international students to select Australia as a study destination. It is also central to the long term trajectory of Australian exports. In the international education market security issues have assumed greater importance and urgency in that through 2003 Australian universities lost half of their prior price advantage vis a vis US universities via appreciation of the Australian dollar. Given that the educational product itself is little different to that of the USA and the UK, differentiation on the basis of student security is likely to be crucial. Yet so far there has been no academic research on student security, and a limited policy focus only on selected aspects.Read moreRead less
Factors associated with the recruitment and retention of the current and future nursing workforce - a longitudinal e-cohort study. The overall effectiveness of the Australian health care system is dependent on a knowledgeable, skilled and viable nursing workforce. Currently there is a critical shortage of qualified nurses actively working in the Australian health care system which limits the capacity of the system to effectively manage an ageing population. The broad aim of this research project is to examine factors associated with recruitment and retention of the current and future nursing workforce across metropolitan, regional and rural areas; with a particular focus on work-based injury. In addition, the project will employ smart use of information technology to develop innovative e-cohort techniques.Read moreRead less
Improving middle years mathematics and science: The role of subject cultures in school and teacher change. Student disengagement with mathematics and science in the middle years of schooling, and the low retention rates into these areas in upper years, is of national concern. This project investigates the role of mathematics and science knowledge, and school subject cultures, in mediating change processes in the middle years. It builds on a highly successful change model developed for science teaching and learning in Victoria to investigate how generic conceptions of teacher pedagogy
and school change intersect with subject matter knowledge and traditions in the closely related areas of mathematics and science. The findings will inform future school change projects.Read moreRead less
Western Australian rural and remote schooling: The influence of learning environments on student participation and retention. By 2010 all Australian States and Territories will have raised the school leaving age from 15 to 17 years of age. As one of the first States to have undertaken this essential step toward re-engaging disaffected youth in education, training and/or employment options, it is important that a rigorous examination of the Western Australian experience is conducted. As one of the first States to have undertaken this essential step toward re-engaging disaffected youth in education, training and/or employment options, it is important that a rigorous examination of the Western Australian experience is conducted. The proposed research focuses on what is likely to be the most problematic area of the initiative for school communities - how and why the programs offered to students in rural and remote school and classroom learning environments impact upon student engagement and retention.Read moreRead less

This initiative will develop the foundations for a network of researchers and practitioners by identifying and establishing directions for research required for schooling the knowledge society. The initiative will engage research leaders across a number of fields, early career researchers and trainee researchers in a collaborative strategy that harnesses the power of information and communications technologies (ICT) to make smart use of research knowledge and to make it available to innovation teams in schools as they respond to the emerging challenges. The initiative will use a leading-edge learning communities Internet platform that is itself the product of an international collaborative effort for which the Commonwealth Government has provided funding of $1.3 million over the last 3 years.
The outcome of the initiative will be the development of the foundation for a fully-fledged Research Network, identification of the key research questions and directions for the next decade, a web-based resource to support the Research Network, and an archive of relevant research for researchers, policy makers and educational practitioners to utilise in enhancing the impact of research on everyday practice and the economic productivity of the nation.Read moreRead less

. This Initiative creates an Educational Research Alliance (ERA) between three strong research domains in order to address the problem of how best to educate current and future generations in contemporary times. These domains have previously focused independently on new identities, new technologies, and new pedagogies and each has achieved significant but localised results. Examining the interconnections and relationships between these domains is necessary to promote the kind of scholarly innovation able to facilitate the creation of truly relevant, responsive, futures-oriented educational systems.
In taking up this challenge ERA adopts a cross-generational and cross-disciplinary approach to assembling an international research network.
