Network Asia: Maximizing Australia's National Capacity in Inter-Disciplinary Research on Asia. Australia has an international reputation for innovative and high impact research into the states, societies, and economies of Asia. The Initiative will survey the volume, range, impact, and international status of Asian area research in Australia, identify themes with high potential for achieving significant outcomes through transnational research and research-training, and develop a strategy for maximizing national research capacity in targeted areas through a national inter-disciplinary network for Asia-area research - Network Asia. Outcomes include a published report on the state of the field and a strategic plan for a viable and sustainable research network.

This project will systematically assess the efficacy and appropriateness of five separate techniques for the recruitment of gay and homosexually active men in Australia. The project will use the data from the Australian Study of Health and Relationships to assess the representativeness of the samples obtained. Using theoretical considerations of the inter-relationship of identity, attraction and practice, the suitability of recruitment strategies for research projects addressing key elements of gay men's health will be assessed. As a by-product of the sampling exercise, a description of the key health concerns of gay and homosexually active men will be developed.

Retiring women: Understanding older female work-life transitions. There are significant gaps in knowledge in relation to the later life experiences of work and retirement among older women, whose career opportunities and trajectories, experiences of balancing work and personal aspects of life, social relationships both at work and in the community, financial security, and lived experience of ageing, may differ from those of men. There are significant gaps in knowledge in relation to the later life experiences of work and retirement among older women, whose career opportunities and trajectories, experiences of balancing work and personal aspects of life, social relationships both at work and in the community, financial security, and lived experience of ageing, may differ from those of men. As a consequence of such gaps, public policymaking and that of employers is based on an incomplete understanding of older women's orientations and attitudes. The study will develop policy and practice recommendations for structuring and enriching women's later job and retirement opportunities.

Perceived Density, Social Interaction and Morale in Australian Rural Communities. The social viability of rural communities rests, to a greater or lesser degree, upon the density of the local settlement network, and residents' perceptions of it. This project will create a measure of perceived density (i.e. people's subjective interpretations of measured density) and will establish how it influences Australian rural residents' social interaction patterns and morale. The project will produce a con .... The project will produce a conceptually rigorous and concrete understanding of the density-related factors influencing rural community social viability and morale, and will aid rural communities in identifying and overcoming local social interaction constraints.
