Business process models are a fundamental instrument for analysing and automating the operations of organisations. At present, the space of business process modelling techniques is characterised by fragmentation with various approaches striking different tradeoffs. Two major families of approaches can be distinguished: activity-centric and business object-centric. These approaches correspond to complementary viewpoints. We see great potential in creating a level of integration between them. Accordingly, the project will investigate the relative expressiveness of these approaches, identify incompatibilities and synergies, and design model transformations. This will establish a foundation for next-generation business process modelling tools.Read moreRead less
The Airport Metropolis: Managing the Interfaces. The project aims to develop coordinated and equitable decision-making to ensure that airport-urban development balances economic, social and environmental issues and produces a sustainable regional (and national) competitive advantage that is both secure and resilient. The project aims to develop coordinated and equitable decision-making to ensure that airport-urban development balances economic, social and environmental issues and produces a sustainable regional (and national) competitive advantage that is both secure and resilient. The project will develop modelling technologies for the innovative management of data to ensure efficient and resilient infrastructure coordination. The outputs will enable an open planning process whereby all stakeholders are able to provide informed input into decision-making. Strategic decision-making, based on increased certainty about future airport and regional planning and development will improve conditions for growth in a range of industries.Read moreRead less
Growing Sustainable Regions: Developing a Rural Statistical Sustainability Framework. Given the challenges facing rural and regional Australia, it is essential that communities and decision-makers have the information and resources to make informed and sustainable decisions. While there is a plethora of data that can provide this evidence-base, it is often complex, disorganised and inaccessible to those who need it. Hence, to facilitate smart information use, this research develops and implement ....Growing Sustainable Regions: Developing a Rural Statistical Sustainability Framework. Given the challenges facing rural and regional Australia, it is essential that communities and decision-makers have the information and resources to make informed and sustainable decisions. While there is a plethora of data that can provide this evidence-base, it is often complex, disorganised and inaccessible to those who need it. Hence, to facilitate smart information use, this research develops and implements a Rural Statistical Sustainability Framework and decision support modelling tool that integrates environmental, economic and social data into a single user-friendly source. This will provide a platform for evidence-based decision-making that will lead to a sustainable future for rural and regional Australia.Read moreRead less
A Marine Cadastre for Australia - Addressing Key Scientific and Policy Issues. A marine cadastre provides a means for delineating, managing and administering legally definable offshore boundaries. Marine cadastre research was initiated in Australia under a previous ARC grant which aimed at defining issues affecting the development of an Australian marine cadastre. The current project focuses on four such issues :
(1) Resolving ambiguities in the definition of the tidal interface

Marine cadastre research was initiated in Australia under a previous ARC grant which aimed at defining issues affecting the development of an Australian marine cadastre. The current project focuses on four such issues :
(1) Resolving ambiguities in the definition of the tidal interface
(2) Issues in the use of natural rather than geometric boundaries to define jurisdictional limits
(3) Expanding the Australian Spatial Data Infrastructure to support a marine cadastre
(4) Legal and security issues intrinsic to the development of a marine cadastre.Read moreRead less
Scenario driven management in a network environment. Scenario planning is the process of identifying plausible futures and their inherent risks. Scenario planning is the process of identifying plausible futures and their inherent risks. The organisation, the network within which it is embedded, and the environment in which the network operates, form a complex system of non-linear, dynamic, interrelationships. This project will develop a continuous process of scenario planning, capturing learning about the future as it emerges. The project fuses the use of agents for intelligent data collection and negotiation with agent-based modelling to build powerful network-based scenario modelling systems for commercial applications. This outcome will place Australia on the frontier of smart information use.Read moreRead less
Development of a Global Decision Support System towards Virtual Manufacturing. The aim of this research project is to develop a global decision support system (GDSS) in order to assist SMEs to improve their competitiveness in the dynamic global market while providing an industry oriented research training for a high calibre PhD student, who would be a valuable asset to Australia. The GDSS will help SMEs leverage their operations in a global context and to adopt a realistic virtual manufacturing ....Development of a Global Decision Support System towards Virtual Manufacturing. The aim of this research project is to develop a global decision support system (GDSS) in order to assist SMEs to improve their competitiveness in the dynamic global market while providing an industry oriented research training for a high calibre PhD student, who would be a valuable asset to Australia. The GDSS will help SMEs leverage their operations in a global context and to adopt a realistic virtual manufacturing system in the future. The significance of the project includes developing a new methodology and a GDSS to assess virtual manufacturing issues for SMEs and assisting them making timely decisions.Read moreRead less
CEWAY: Cognitively ergonomic wayfinding directions for location-based services. This project develops qualitative models of wayfinding directions based on landmarks (e.g., 'to the hospital') and common spatial predicates (e.g. 'near to'). These models provide a basis for selecting salient features in different contexts and combining these features with vague spatial predicates. This project develops qualitative models of wayfinding directions based on landmarks (e.g., 'to the hospital') and common spatial predicates (e.g. 'near to'). These models provide a basis for selecting salient features in different contexts and combining these features with vague spatial predicates. Such wayfinding directions require less cognitive workload and lead to higher success rates in wayfinding than current approaches. The project develops an integrated formal model of context-dependent salience and navigation under uncertainty. A demonstrator will be implemented based on the industry partners' software platform and data. Human subject tests using the demonstrator software will be used to verify the efficacy of our approach.Read moreRead less

The City of Onkaparinga, Fleurieu Regional Development and Flinders University have pooled their resources to identify new technologies capability in the Southern Adelaide region. Strategic and collaborative initiatives with business associations will be evaluated for the development of new economic strategies for these technologies. This region is highly representative of similar regional areas within Australia, in which the identification of new technologies capability is not well characterised. With a reduction in conventional heavy industry in the region, it is believed that a better understanding of new technologies capability for application to the southern region will promote essential economic growth.Read moreRead less

The development of negotiation support systems that focus upon complying with notions of equity, rather than mere integrative bargaining, will lead to more durable outcomes, meaning negotiated settlements will not be discarded and constantly re-litigated. Our development of appropriate systems will provide disputants with information and knowledge that will lead to the continuation of constructive relationships following disputes and reduce the magnitude and extent of conflicts. This will lead to significant cost savings in the administration of justice as well as reduced legal fees. It will result in more harmonious communities - especially in families and body corporates.Read moreRead less
