Development of Tool Interfaces and Data Standards for Enabling Remote Secondary Analysis of Qualitative Data. This proposal will promote sharing and rapid secondary analysis of natural language and other qualitative data by providing interface standards between qualitative analysis systems, and will enhance the integration of analytic methods through improved archiving. This will be achieved by the construction and dissemination of open standards for the efficient, flexible transport and storage of annotation metadata, along with demonstrated implementations of these standards in qualitative tools. At the current stage of development of e-Social Science, the provision of middleware for collaborative work is more important than large-scale computational capability. The initiative will leverage existing ARC investment in qualitative data archiving.

Use of Interval Arithmetic and GRID Computing in Computational Molecular Science: Bounding Errors and Locating Global Minima. Catastrophic failure of the Ariane 5 rocket in 1996 and the inability of Patriot missile systems to reach their targets during the 1991 Gulf war were both attributed to numerical computing errors. Less dramatic, but in a similar vein, this project aims to study the numerical stability of contemporary computational molecular science applications. The focus will be on linear scaling electronic structure codes, methods that are critical to the study of nano- and bio-materials, and are therefore of great importance to our economic future and medical well being. The project will build expertise within Australia in the area of interval arithmetic, an area that is currently poorly represented.

Non-Parametric Modelling of Motion and Depth fields with Boundary Geometry for Scalable Compression and Dissemination. Applications for large format video surveillance are about to grow rapidly, starting with military applications and then moving into the civilian arena, highlighting the importance of compression for interactive dissemination, so as to make best use of limited communication channels. This project will develop an innovative representation for motion and depth/elevation maps, which addresses a key obstacle in the deployment of technology for efficient interactive access to large format video and geospatial imagery. These applications are relevant to Australia's defence and infrastructure for smart information use. Moreover, this is a strategic proposal to strengthen Australia's existing lead in aspects of interactive media dissemination.

Highly scalable video compression is critical to the emergence of new applications in video distribution and management. Examples include interactive remote browsing of video and robust video surveillance over shared networks. Previous ARC funding produced fundamental breakthroughs in scalable video compression, resulting in a new paradigm which has been adopted by leading researchers in the field. The present project addresses the two most important problems which currently limit the potential of this paradigm. Inspired by the applicant's recent discoveries, the outcomes of this project are likely to represent significant scientific breakthroughs and contribute to a new international video coding standard.

XML Views of Relational Databases: Semantics and Update Problems. XML is the standard for representing, publishing and exchanging data over the Internet and relational database is the dominant technology for data management. Updating XML views over relational data is fundamental to bring these two technologies together to serve Internet-based applications. Australia has been a leading country in both developing and applying internet technologies. The theoretic outcomes of this project will contribute to the advance in database and web research communities and establish us as an internationally leading group in this research area. The technological outcomes will help organisations in Australia effectively and efficiently conduct e-Business on the Internet.
