This project provides a public space for audience members in local communities in Australia, Israel, the Netherlands, UK and USA to share their memories of local popular music heritage. By privileging these voices, the project has the potential to develop and strengthen community cohesion and also raise questions of how these voices might be incorporated into the production ....Popular music and cultural memory: Localised popular music histories and their significance for national music industries. This project provides a public space for audience members in local communities in Australia, Israel, the Netherlands, UK and USA to share their memories of local popular music heritage. By privileging these voices, the project has the potential to develop and strengthen community cohesion and also raise questions of how these voices might be incorporated into the production and distribution practices of Australia's music industry. The aim of the program is to foster research collaboration between the ANU's Humanities Research Centre and Lingnan University's Cultural Research and Development Program by examining public culture, transnational culture, urban landscapes and urban cultural identities in the contemporary Asia-Pacific and Australian context. The aim of the program is to foster research collaboration between the ANU's Humanities Research Centre and Lingnan University's Cultural Research and Development Program by examining public culture, transnational culture, urban landscapes and urban cultural identities in the contemporary Asia-Pacific and Australian context. We will do this by extending ties with researchers from the region including early career and students and by developing a comparative cross-cultural methodology capable of encompassing specific socio-historical patterns and processes of dynamically changing public cultural formations in contemporary urban centres in the Asia-Pacific, including Australia. Specific outcomes include a book, e-journal and a multi-media exhibition.

My Island Home - Construction of cultural identity for Torres Strait Islanders who migrated to the mainland post World War Two. The aims of the research are to examine 1) the construction of cultural identity for Torres Strait Islanders who migrated to Cairns during 1946 to 1955 and 2) to identify issues in relation to the construction and maintenance of cultural identity; the Islander's 'integration' into Australian society; and the transitional processes they negotiated in establishing new com ....My Island Home - Construction of cultural identity for Torres Strait Islanders who migrated to the mainland post World War Two. The aims of the research are to examine 1) the construction of cultural identity for Torres Strait Islanders who migrated to Cairns during 1946 to 1955 and 2) to identify issues in relation to the construction and maintenance of cultural identity; the Islander's 'integration' into Australian society; and the transitional processes they negotiated in establishing new communities away from the Torres Strait. This project is significant as it is one of the very few research projects conducted by a Torres Strait Islander on this issue, and its outcome will be a new perspective on the migration and culture of Torres Strait Islander people.
