Model checking is a formal method that is used extensively for this purpose, particularly for mission-critical systems. In this work, a new kind of verifying tool, based on model checking, is developed. This new model checker is intelligent because a heuristic search is integrated into the underlying formalism. It is not exhaustive, and is more efficient than a traditional model checker during the design phase because it does only a minimum amount of work in its search for a fault.Read moreRead less

In e-Research environments, users need to have secure access to remote resources owned by different organisations. Since these resources are not directly under the control of e-Research applications, they need to negotiate with resource providers for access time, duration, and the level of quality of service expected to make sure that the interlinked operations are performed as required. This project develops information and communications technologies that enable the creation of such e-Research environments.Read moreRead less

Future design capability will depend on being able to model the requirements and constraints of heterogeneous systems, so that they can be simulated and formally verified before being manufactured and deployed. This project will develop techniques and software tools for simulation and verification based on the new Rosetta system-level design language. These tools will make the design of complex computer-based systems faster, more reliable and less costly by minimizing design errors early in the design flow.Read moreRead less

Australia possesses capability in the area of palaeoclimate modelling, but efforts to understand our past natural climate variations are hampered by the computational profligacy of such models. Further, Australia does not possess a capability in intermediate complexity models which would allow experiments that take account of tectonic time scales. This initiative aims to develop a framework to allow the integration of climate system models with grid computing approaches (such as Nimrod/G) and test this framework on a pilot study of the Australian palaeomonsoon system. In addition, we will use this initiative to develop international linkages to enhance our ability to address problems of importance to Australian natural climate variability.Read moreRead less

In this project innovative IT methods will be developed to assist biologists to solve complex and important biological problems. Many important applications in computational biology need very accurate and reliable tools for multiple sequence alignment and phylogeny reconstruction. Unfortunately, current existing tools are unreliable and are prone to serious errors when applied to large and divergent biological sequences. The success of this project will not only make significant contribution to the relevant research fields, but also help achieve goals in certain real-life biological research projects which are unique and important to Australia.Read moreRead less

issues. This project will address these issues by extending a highly
efficient and extensible Java implementation to be aware of its cluster
environment.

This model will support quality typesetting of all of the modern - and many ancient - languages and scripts, on media such as paper, computer screen, paper maps and online maps, for regular and safety-critical applications.
The fundamental innovations in this proposal are the use of a tree-structured parameter space (generalization of Unix environment variables) and a multiple-pass approach to typesetting (as used in compilers). These innovative techniques will be integrated into computer software used worldwide.Read moreRead less

Current computer systems cannot cope with extremely heavy traffic demands. A solution to such a difficult problem is to dynamically balance the load across the system's servers. Several solutions have been proposed and demonstrate advances in certain limited conditions (e.g. uniform distribution). However fundamental research work must be undertaken beyond the current way of dealing with the core issues of load balancing. Accounting for realistic conditions is a theoretical and practical challenge. This project aims at developing theoretical and computational models for dynamic task distribution for the studied systems. The benefits include substantial improvement of the system response time.Read moreRead less
