FlashLite: a high performance machine for data intensive science: The 21st century has been described as the century of data. Experts predict an exponential growth in the amount of data that will be captured, generated and archived. Australia has made significant progress towards addressing some of the opportunities and infrastructure challenges posed by such rapid increase in data volumes. However, these investments do not address the growing need to process data. Conventional supercomputers are unable to meet the challenges of the data explosion. The large gap in latency and bandwidth between the processor, memory and disk subsystems means that the processor is often idle waiting to fetch data. This project will build a platform focussed on data intensive science.Read moreRead less
Reconfigurable Computing Implementations of Reactive Systems. Reconfigurable computing combines programmable software with programmable hardware and shows real promise as an efficient implementation technology for real-time embedded computing applications. However, its use in real-time systems has been hampered by a lack of rigorous analysis of its benefits, and by a lack of a suitable methodology for the efficient specification, analysis and design of such systems. However, its use in real-time systems has been hampered by a lack of rigorous analysis of its benefits, and by a lack of a suitable methodology for the efficient specification, analysis and design of such systems. This project seeks to develop such a methodology, and demonstrate its benefits through several proof-of-concept application implementations.Read moreRead less

Vast increases in computing power and the arrival of new scientific instruments are contributing to the so-called data deluge of the 21st century. Accessing and archiving these data is essential to research. While the underlying computing and network requirements are well resourced, data access has been relatively neglected in Australia. A continuing problem in Australian research communities is the absence of coordinated access to digital storage resources. In many cases computational and experimental data are stored on ad-hoc resources, such as local university servers, PC disc drives, and are not generally accessible. The central goal of this proposal is to provide access to an integrated scientific data storage capacity for Australia.Read moreRead less

As Internet connectivity becomes ubiquitous, so does the need for computer network security. As algorithms become more sophisticated, and network speeds increase, software-only implementations of network security applications become less feasible on small, embedded network appliances. This project investigates new computer architectures, based on reconfigurable System-on-Chip technology, which can improve algorithm speed through specialised instruction sets, hardware accelerators, and parallel processing. Research outcomes will be commercialised by the project's industry partner - a global leader in low-cost network security appliances.Read moreRead less

The project industry partner, Invensys Rail Systems, has a major design group in Australia, who work with railway signalling systems throughout the world. Invensys are keen to adopt new technologies to more efficiently and effectively implement signalling functions. However, the safety-critical nature of railway signalling means that any new technology must be analysed in detail to bring it to an acceptable technical readiness level. The outcomes of this research will be an improved technical readiness level for FPGAs in signalling systems, and this will allow Invensys' Australian design group to develop new technologies and allow them to compete more effectively in the global marketplace.Read moreRead less

Vast increases in computing power and the arrival of new scientific instruments are contributing to the so-called data deluge of the 21st century. Archiving these data is essential to research. While the underlying computing and network requirements are well resourced, data storage capacity has been relatively neglected in Australia. A continuing problem in Australian research communities is the absence of coordinated digital storage resources. In many cases computational and experimental data are stored on ad-hoc resources, such as local university servers, PC disc drives, CDs, or DVDs, and are not generally accessible. The central goal of this proposal is to provide a long-term, integrated scientific data storage capacity for Australia. Read moreRead less
