Human analysis of huge quantities of relational data in biotechnology, web engineering, social networks, and computer networks requires visualization. In recent years, three-dimensional visualisation has promised to give new insights into such abstract data. However the past ten years of visualization research has had very little impact on the industry; visualization software providers have not adopted visualization methods developed by academics. We hypothesise that current 3D relational visualization methods fail because they do not pay attention to the human perception of topology. In this project we will leverage mathematical topology to construct new methods for the 3D visualization of relational data.

Collaborative Working using Shared Applications in the Access Grid. This project aims to further develop an amplified collaboration environment, based on the Access Grid (AG), that will support shared software applications between geographically distributed research groups. This enhanced AG will provide a platform for collaborative and network-based, shared scientific visualisation tools. The project will build upon our all-linux AG, the emerging suite of tools for tiled displays and our strateg ....Collaborative Working using Shared Applications in the Access Grid. This project aims to further develop an amplified collaboration environment, based on the Access Grid (AG), that will support shared software applications between geographically distributed research groups. This enhanced AG will provide a platform for collaborative and network-based, shared scientific visualisation tools. The project will build upon our all-linux AG, the emerging suite of tools for tiled displays and our strategic collaborations with JCU, Leeds (UK), ANL (USA) and NCHC (Taiwan). Case studies will be on ecological and geosciences data, relevant to agriculture and coastal studies, marine sciences and coral reefsRead moreRead less

A Computer-Aided Cartooning System. This project is aimed at developing a computer-aided system to accelerate main image-related processes in cartoon production. Using such a system, many of the tedious and repetitive tasks can be performed semi-automatically. The project is focused on accurate representation and matching of shapes. New vectorization methods based on projection onto convex sets (POCS), and new matching methods based on multi-stage hierarchical structures will be developed. New vectorization methods based on projection onto convex sets (POCS), and new matching methods based on multi-stage hierarchical structures will be developed. The targeted applications include entertainment, next generation mobile services, and the internet.Read moreRead less
Establishment of Identity from Quantitative Analysis of Facial Characteristics. This project will provide the Criminal Justice systems in Australia and Japan with more rigorous methods of identifying people from eye-witness and surveillance video reports. It builds on research previously undertaken into analysis of facial morphology, and provides an innovative approach to identification through the use of three dimensional modelling and high speed computer graphics augmented by Fourier analysis ....Establishment of Identity from Quantitative Analysis of Facial Characteristics. This project will provide the Criminal Justice systems in Australia and Japan with more rigorous methods of identifying people from eye-witness and surveillance video reports. It builds on research previously undertaken into analysis of facial morphology, and provides an innovative approach to identification through the use of three dimensional modelling and high speed computer graphics augmented by Fourier analysis of shape parameters. The project is part of a formal collaboration with the National Research Institute of Police Science in Tokyo, providing an ethnically diverse data set of three dimensional graphical and mathematical models.Read moreRead less
Holographic Videography for Spatial Communication. This project is aimed at developing a true colour holographic video display in which a user or users may interact with completely synthetic objects.
This will be the first system of its kind, giving a user the illusion of real physical interaction with a completely holographic object. The illusion may be shared by many participants without the use of external aids. The project has the potential to improve productivity in many applications suc ....Holographic Videography for Spatial Communication. This will be the first system of its kind, giving a user the illusion of real physical interaction with a completely holographic object. The illusion may be shared by many participants without the use of external aids. The project has the potential to improve productivity in many applications such as geospatial information systems, x-ray inspection, and medical imaging, by giving a user a much more natural way of interacting with three dimensional data.Read moreRead less

The creative industries are at the forefront of a 21st century economy. For Australia to play a leading role, artists and designers require innovative software systems that support original creative practice. Creativity is a highly sought-after yet little understood phenomena. This research will advance our understanding of creativity, developing imaginative new ways of working with technology: enabling creative outcomes that are difficult or impossible to achieve with existing software tools. In a global and rapidly changing industry, this project will give Australian creative practitioners and software developers a competitive edge, enhancing our international reputation as a leader in this area.Read moreRead less
