One of the greatest challenges in understanding the brain is the enormous range of scales it operates on, from single neurons a few microns across to entire hemispheres on the scale of tens of centimetres. This project will investigate how large-scale brain rhythms influence and facilitate information processing, particularly motor control, among small networks of individual neurons. The research questions will be addressed by combining detailed computer simulations with data-driven analyses of empirical human and monkey brain dynamics. The outcomes of this project will provide a richer understanding of how our brains encode and process information, leading to practical benefits such as improved control of artificial limbs.Read moreRead less

This project aims to investigate how surface biofilms affect flows at the ocean surface. Great stretches of the ocean surface are covered by an organic microlayer called biofilm. Flows at the ocean surface are a crucial part of climate machinery, and biofilms have profound, largely unexplored effects on these flows. There is no fundamental understanding of how biofilms affect fluid motion. This project aims to use laboratory models and new measurement techniques to study and quantify the impact of biofilms on turbulent transport. Understanding these effects is important in a time of climate change and this knowledge may also help address environmental issues related to spreading of pollutants and flow control at the ocean surface.Read moreRead less

Our proposal is motivated by and based upon the successful representation of time series as a network (or graph). We construct an abstract representation of a system from measurements of its changing behaviour over time. Properties of that structure (the network) then allow us to infer diagnostic information of the system. Specifically, we propose to apply this to livestock welfare during transport. By measuring the biological and environment condition of the animal we construct a network representation of that system. Geometric features of that network can then be used to infer health or duress of the subject. This proposal will develop the generic mathematical machinery to connect geometric features of the network with system behaviour. Read moreRead less

This project aims to transform the understanding of the structure and function of the brain as a complex physical system. It aims to reveal and unify new aspects of information processing, transitions in conscious state, and nonlinear brain interactions by translating and applying concepts and methods from physics and mathematics. It will treat brain structure and dynamics together to address emergent phenomena like waves and patterns on multiple scales, treating waves as equal participants alongside neurons. Innovative predictions of brain phenomena will aim to be verified against data and used to understand brain networks, dynamics, and the physical phenomena underlying information processing and consciousness.Read moreRead less

This project aims to establish a fundamental framework to efficiently analyse and control critical, modern infrastructure networks such as power grids and the Internet. The project expects to bridge the gap between cyber-physical network theory and network resilience engineering through developing a body of knowledge about cyber-physical systems, security analysis and emergence of network behaviours. The project will develop design methodologies to improve the resilience of these networks against internal faults and external attacks. This should improve the robustness and invulnerability of Australian power grids and the Internet against random failures and malicious cyber-physical attacks.Read moreRead less

This focussed intense energy will produce abundant visible photons from infrared light. Genetically engineered cells able to be stimulated optically by using an optogenetics method will be illuminated by our nanoscale light causing modulation of cell activity. This new capability will enable remote control of neuronal activity in specific circuits within the nervous system without the limitation of surgically inserted optical fibres.Read moreRead less
Quantum equilibration. This project will shed light on a fundamental problem in physics - how do fragile quantum systems, entirely isolated from the rest of the world, return to equilibrium when disturbed from their natural state? Our results will provide a theoretical underpinning for the development of quantum simulators that can be used for the design of advanced materials.

This project aims to address a big challenge in nanophotonics by developing revolutionary methods for efficient chiral sensing of molecules without the need for spectrometry, frequency scanning, or moving mechanical parts, and to enhance chiroptical signals a hundredfold with the help of metasurface structures. Resonant metasurfaces are arrays of engineered dielectric nanoparticles with extraordinary characteristics, and they would allow to overcome current limitations of chiral sensing analytical tools. Detecting chiral molecules in low concentrations is crucially important to many fields of biology, chemistry, and pharmacy, as well as to the food and cosmetics industries, constituting a market of tens of billions of dollars.Read moreRead less
