Linkage Projects - Grant ID: LP120200380

    Funder
    Australian Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $501,000.00
    Summary
Providing a genetic framework to enhance the success and benefits from forest restoration and carbon plantings in rural landscapes. This project will provide a genetic framework to inform strategies for climate change adaptation in forest restoration and carbon plantings in Australia. Key questions to be addressed include the value of local versus non-local seed sources and the role of tree genetics in shaping biodiversity and other ecosystem services.

    Summary
Can species interactions drive diversification? Species interactions may drive the evolution of species diversity but we currently lack the empirical evidence to demonstrate conclusively how this occurs. Using a group of closely-related species native to Australia's rainforest, this study will test how species interactions drive the evolution of mating traits and the formation of new species.

The coexistence of antibiotic resistant and sensitive bacteria in microbial communities represents a paradox. Combining novel ecological models and competition experiments, this project aims to investigate how the pulsing of antibiotics and resources affects the coexistence of resistant and sensitive bacteria. This project expects to generate new knowledge into how the complex non-equilibrium dynamics of natural systems feeds back to regulate the spread of antibiotic resistance in microbial communities. This should advance our fundamental understanding of microbial competition, and provide a foundation for the development of new ecologically-aware strategies for managing resistance.
