Microwave System for Early Breast Cancer Detection Employing Ultra Wideband Conformal Array Antenna. Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women in various parts of the world. Currently the primary method for breast screening is X-ray mammography and in rare cases Magnetic Resonance Imaging. X-ray mammography has saved many lives, but the technology still produces a relativity high number of false negative and false positive diagnoses. In the last decade, active microwave techniques have attracted considerable interest as viable alternatives to X-ray mammography. This project aims at the design and development of a low-cost microwave system, which will complement all the currently available breast cancer diagnosis tools. Read moreRead less
Microwave Head Monitor Using Compressed Sensing and Differential Techniques. The aim of this project is the design and development of a low-cost, non-ionising, and non-invasive microwave technology that can be used to diagnose and localise early brain injuries of premature newborn babies. The system aims to use a combination of compressed sensing and differential imaging techniques to produce, within a few secon ....Microwave Head Monitor Using Compressed Sensing and Differential Techniques. The aim of this project is the design and development of a low-cost, non-ionising, and non-invasive microwave technology that can be used to diagnose and localise early brain injuries of premature newborn babies. It proposes to include a switched antenna array and wide-band microwave transceiver. The system aims to use a combination of compressed sensing and differential imaging techniques to produce, within a few seconds, microwave images of the brain making it a real-time monitoring tool. By providing vital information about the brain at the incubator side, the proposed compact technology would avoid the risky move of critically ill babies to the expensive and bulky conventional scanners which, furthermore, cannot operate as frequent monitoring tools.Read moreRead less
Electromagnetic field strength simulator (ELMO) for RF hazard assessment. There is significant community fear related to exposure to mobile telephone radiation. The computer program ELMO will be designed to accept information about all RF transmitters in the vicinity of cellular telephone towers from an existing database, and to calculate the total field strength. This will allow hazard assessment for both RF technicians working on the tower and adjacent residents.
Tools and models for measuring and predicting growth in internet addressing and routing complexity. We analyse patterns in the allocation and actual use of Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) addresses to predict the technical and market pressures for deployment of IPv6. The utilisation models will help evaluate the potential for emerging markets in scarce IPv4 address prefixes to increase costs to the end-users of Australia's future national broadband network.
An assessment of the fundamental size limits for planar antennas using unconstrained optimisation methods. Portable wireless devices can be reduced in size and battery demands through best practice antenna design. The absolute size limits recently developed for ideal structures will be tested against real printed antenna structures using powerful computational tools and experimental demonstration for sensor networks in health care applications.

In-road microwave system for traffic monitoring and vehicle identification. This project aims to develop a cost-effective, in-road microwave radar system for traffic monitoring and vehicle identification. The ever increasing number of vehicles on our roads makes conventional approaches to traffic management less effective and prohibitively expensive. The new system will integrate chip-enabled license plate technology with novel microwave radar techniques to produce real-time data that supports immediate intervention for improved road safety, vehicle identification and driver validation. Multiple sensors will also provide uniquely rich data to improve traffic management decisions, road infrastructure planning and operation. This research could significantly reduce the effect of traffic incidents and congestions across Australia.Read moreRead less
