Optimising Asthma Management In Pregnancy For Optimal Infant Health

Summary
Asthma affects 12% of pregnant women in Australia. These women are at increased risk of poor pregnancy outcomes, such as preterm birth and hospitalisation of the neonate. Reducing asthma attacks by providing optimal asthma management during pregnancy may lower these risks. This research will test whether a strategy which determines treatment changes based on a marker of airway inflammation, improves outcomes for maternal, neonatal and child health.
Developing novel chemistries for removing environmental surface biofilms to reduce hospital acquired infections. This project will develop new detergents that more efficiently clean hospitals. This will increase hospital safety by decreasing infections, thus saving lives and healthcare costs.

As all body systems are immature at birth, premature babies can develop one or many different health problems. Many factors before, during and after birth may influence the baby’s response to different treatments. Our collaborative research program seeks to understand the big picture, to help us design better treatments that improve long term outcomes after preterm birth.
Innovation In The Primary Care Management Of Back Pain

Summary
Back pain affect millions of Australians. Billions of dollars are spent each year on treament but health outcomes are often poor. Experience from overseas shows that simply spending more money on current treatments won’t fix the problem. This fellowship will be used to support a program of research to improve the quality and efficiency of treatments and health services.
Major progress has been made in the treatment of cancer by the development of inhibitors of oncogenes that drive cancer growth. This application will test whether this approach can be used for melanomas with activation of the CDK4 oncogene that becomes activated in over 50% of melanomas. We will indentify which patients melanomas respond best to this approach and understand why some melanomas but not other responds providing the scientific framework for clinical trials of CDK4 inhibitors.

To ensure this quality of care, it is NHMRC policy to only use animals that have been bred and reared specifically for research purposes. The National Non-Human Primate Breeding and Research Facility, hosted by Monash University, ensures that Australian community has access to macaque monkeys and marmosets to carry out research under the highest quality conditions. Children undergoing cancer treatment are at an increased risk of infection. This is managed by admission to hospital for antibiotics which can be a frightening experience for the child, disruptive for their family and expensive for the healthcare system. While many need admission, a proportion of patients can be safely managed at home with oral or intravenous antibiotics. This project aims to identify these children, so as to improve their quality of life, and decrease cost of treatment.

Women with diabetes in pregnancy and their babies are more likely to have health problems, e.g. preeclampsia, being born early, or admitted to neonatal intensive care unit. We know that lowering mum’s blood glucose to the levels found in women without diabetes is important but does not prevent problems completely. The purpose of these studies is to look at the other parts of metabolism that are different in women with diabetes e.g. blood fats, so we can understand if we should address them.
The First Randomised Placebo Controlled Trial Of Paracetamol For Acute Low Back Pain

Summary
Low back pain is a considerable burden for individuals and society. While clinical guidelines recommend simple treatments such as paracetamol for new low back pain, most people receive costly and potentially harmful treatments. This may be due to limited direct evidence supporting the recommended treatments. A placebo controlled clinical trial of 1650 patients with recent onset low back pain will be conducted to determine the effect that paracetamol has on improving the time to recovery.
