The repeated release of obnoxious odours from intensive livestock, waste management and wastewater treatment facilities can constitute a major air quality problem for a local population. Odour management has traditionally been maintained by the use of buffer distances that have significantly decreased with urban encroachment. Odour assessment is conventionally measured in terms of odour concentration; however this standardised method does not take into account odour quality characters or their intensity. The project will characterise by sensory means the odour nuisance types and intensity of different odorous emissions to better define and understand the relationship between process operations and olfactory annoyance.

The project in advanced materials is significant in probing an exciting topology in nanostructural assemblies - helicates - the understanding of the interactions of which will assist the development of optically pure molecules that are the key to high-value drugs, thus contributing to enhanced development in the specialty chemicals and pharmaceuticals industry. The research may result in economic benefits for Australia, since it will develop synthetic materials with the potential to perform tasks in high optical purity essential drug synthesis. Further, it will enhance the knowledge and skills base within the country through training of highly applicable scientists for a growing national priority area.

Multivariate approaches to matching spectra for environmental and forensic purposes. Apart from an increased understanding of these commonly-used analytical methods, and their extension to current problems, the outcome of the project will be programs that can be used by the Environmental Protection Agency to give the probability that an oil spill comes from an alleged source. This evidence may be laid before a court, and is more objective than present methods. The identification of illegal drugs .... This evidence may be laid before a court, and is more objective than present methods. The identification of illegal drugs will also be made possible, including information about the country or region of origin, and the place and processes used to refine the drug.

A multi-metal ion sensor for analysis of environmental water. The aim of this research project is to develop an electrochemical sensor array on a single chip for the detection of several heavy metals in wastewater samples. Each electrode in the array will be modified with a different metal-binding peptide ligand; resulting in a characteristic response pattern for a given metal ion. Deconvolution of the sensor response into the response patterns of the individual metals will be achieved using p .... Deconvolution of the sensor response into the response patterns of the individual metals will be achieved using pattern recognition software employing artificial neural networks and other multivariate techniques. Successful development of the multi-analyte sensor will allow the rapid monitoring of environmentally important metal ions in the field.
