Drug Targeting to Immune Cells Using Modified Inulin Particles. Vaxine Pty Ltd is an Australian biotechnology company that has discovered specific particulate forms of inulin that are efficiently internalised by human immune cells. This project aims to exploit cell migration to injury and infection sites by attaching drugs to inulin particles creating a targeted drug delivery system. This system will transport drugs specifically to afflicted areas, reducing systemic concentrations of drugs and h ....Drug Targeting to Immune Cells Using Modified Inulin Particles. This system will transport drugs specifically to afflicted areas, reducing systemic concentrations of drugs and hence the risks of dose related side effects. This project has potential both to improve healthcare and to encourage the growth of expertise in the biotechnology industry in Australia.Read moreRead less
New approaches to inhibition of activity of HIV integrase. This project aims to assist in the development of novel anti-HIV drugs that will benefit the 17000 Australians and more than 33 million people worldwide who are currently suffering with this terrible disease. The project will utilise state-of-the-art approaches in structure-based drug design to identify and synthesise compounds as leads for the development of anti-HIV drugs. Furthermore, the project will provide invaluable training for t ....New approaches to inhibition of activity of HIV integrase. Enhancing stress tolerance in plants by manipulation of properties of stress responsive transcription factors. This project will describe structural and functional properties of cereal transcription factors that are critical to plant development under hostile environmental conditions. The knowledge of the revealed molecular mechanisms of transcription factors will open avenues to developments of improved crop plants.
Understanding the molecular basis of heparanase activity. This project aims to advance our understanding of the structure and impact on biological processes of heparanase (HSPE), an enzyme of critical importance. HSPE’s ability to interact with heparan sulfate (HS), a key component of the extracellular matrix and basement membranes, makes HPSE a pivotal enzyme in many important physiological and disease-related processes ranging from angiogenesis, tumour metastasis, inflammation, hair follicle ....Understanding the molecular basis of heparanase activity. This project aims to advance our understanding of the structure and impact on biological processes of heparanase (HSPE), an enzyme of critical importance. HSPE’s ability to interact with heparan sulfate (HS), a key component of the extracellular matrix and basement membranes, makes HPSE a pivotal enzyme in many important physiological and disease-related processes ranging from angiogenesis, tumour metastasis, inflammation, hair follicle development to wrinkle formation. The knowledge gained through this project is expected to provide new insight into the interaction between HSPE and HS/HSPG to reveal new pathways to the development of inhibitors to treat diseases such as cancer and diabetes.Read moreRead less
Next generation dengue diagnostics. The 2009 dengue epidemic was widespread and the largest in North Queensland for 50 years. The outbreak was not quickly contained despite an extensive education program and a mosquito control taskforce. All four types of Dengue were detected, greatly increasing the chance of more severe complications such as Dengue haemorrhagic fever and Dengue shock syndrome. This project will improve our knowledge of Dengue proteins used in tests to diagnose the virus. The ne ....Next generation dengue diagnostics. The new knowledge will be used to develop an easy to use test to diagnose Dengue infection early, rapidly and accurately. Effective diagnosis of Dengue will then allow timely implementation of intervention strategies (mosquito control, public advice, isolation and care).Read moreRead less
