The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) invites you to participate in a short survey about your
interaction with the ARDC and use of our national research infrastructure and services. The survey will take
approximately 5 minutes and is anonymous. It’s open to anyone who uses our digital research infrastructure
services including Reasearch Link Australia.
We will use the information you provide to improve the national research infrastructure and services we
deliver and to report on user satisfaction to the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research
Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) program.
Please take a few minutes to provide your input. The survey closes COB Friday 29 May 2026.

Operator algebras associated to product systems, and higher-rank-graph algebras. Operator algebras are used to study a wide range of physical systems in quantum physics and quantum computing, and in electrical engineering. The clearer our picture of how operator algebras work, the better we are able to predict and explain how these physical systems will behave. The proposed research project is aimed at showing that we can describe operator algebras in terms of simple coloured diagrams rather than abstract mathematical symbols. Consequently, the project will lead to a simpler and less technical approach to the physical problems which operator algebras are used to study.Read moreRead less
Physical realisation of enriched quantum symmetries. This project aims to investigate fundamental mathematical structures in modern category theory, providing an algebraic description of physical systems including topological order and conformal field theory. The project will study quantum symmetry, and classify and construct new classes of conformal field theories, using novel tools from enriched category theory, modular forms, and lattice gauge theory.

The main goal is to understand the landscape of topological and conformal field theories, laying the foundation for new technologies based on topological order. This timely project capitalises on the recent arrival of subfactor experts in Australia, and builds capacity in mathematical research and international links in a cutting edge field.Read moreRead less
Modular character sheaves. This project aims to complete the fundamental mathematical theory of modular group representations, the algebraic description of symmetry over finite number systems. Group representation theory can be applied to any linear problem involving symmetry. However, the modular case, where the characteristic of the underlying field is a prime number, is less understood than real or complex scalars, and this lack of understanding blocks potential applications. This project will use geometric methods to answer questions about modular representations of the finite groups of Lie type, the most important class of finite groups. This project could make modular representation theory essential for computations, enabling faster solutions to problems of linear algebra and allowing future applications in such areas as data transmission technology.Read moreRead less

Algebraic stacks through the Tannakian perspective. Algebraic stacks are natural types of spaces to consider when parameterising geometric objects in mathematics and physics. The Tannakian formalism allows one to view algebraic stacks through the way it acts on other geometric objects. This project aims to employ the perspective provided by the Tannakian formalism to prove innovative and foundational results in order to elucidate the geometry of algebraic stacks.
Global aspects of dualities in String Theory in the presence of background fluxes. String Theory, known to the general public as the "Theory of Everything', is currently an extremely active area of research internationally. It has not only stimulated considerable interaction between mathematical physicists and mathematicians, but also increased public interest in science through television programs and books. Unfortunately, the majority of the Australian scientific community has not yet caught up with these developments. Our recent papers, all published in premier journals in this field, have not only received widespread international attention but have also increased the profile of String Theory amongst Australia's mathematicians and mathematical physicists. The proposed project is expected to continue this trend.Read moreRead less

Higher representation theory. Representation theory lies at the very centre of mathematics, with applications in all areas of mathematics and mathematical physics; at some level it is about observing the symmetries of a system and exploiting them, and this has been invaluable. This project will explore the forefront of the modern, higher version of this research field.
Canonical bases for standard modules of affine Hecke algebras. Lie theory is the study of a class of mathematical structures which arise in many different fields of mathematics, and in areas of physics such as quantum field theory. One such structure, much studied in the last twenty years, is the affine Hecke algebra of an algebraic group. These have standard modules (defined geometrically) which currently lack convenient bases (roughly speaking, ways to write them algebraically). The main aim of this project is to prove that standard modules have canonical bases with certain special properties, as conjectured by G. Lusztig.Read moreRead less
Modular Index Theory. This project capitilises on Australian advances in mathematics, particularly noncommutative geometry. It will maintain and extend Australia's prominence in this subject, providing excellent opportunities for young researchers via the research networks this project will establish. Being at the interface of ideas in mathematics and physics, there is potential for future technological spin offs for Australia.
Flag varieties and configuration spaces in algebra. School students learn that curves may be described by means of equations, which may therefore be solved geometrically; this is an example of the interaction of algebra and geometry. In this project geometric ideas such as simplicial geometry and cohomological representation theory will be developed, which address deep questions in modern algebra.
