Multifunctional confocal laser scanning microscope with time resolved and two photon imaging and fluorescence correlation capabilities. We seek to establish an Australian first confocal laser scanning microscope with time resolved imaging and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy capabilities. Its advantages include ultrasensitive detection of weak fluorescent emissions against high autofluorescent background by using fluorescence lifetime signatures, with over three orders of magnitude discrimination improvement. The system will also be able to monitor binding of single molecules. These techniques will open new and exciting avenues for interdisciplinary research at the frontier between biological and physical sciences. The microscope will operate within an existing multi-user Optical Characterisation Facility supporting research of an established network of scientists in the Sydney area.

Biotechnology applications in the veterinary pharmaceutical industry: Pharmacological manipulation of ovarian function in domestic animals. The purpose of this research is to develop a humane, simple, safe, effective means of sterilizing female domestic animals without the need for surgical intervention. This novel experimental strategy is to target the supply of dormant eggs in the ovaries of female mammals. Every female mammal is born with a finite supply of eggs in the ovarian cortex. These cells cannot divide and so when this store is exhausted, reproduction ceases. Our strategy is to develop pharmaceutical reagents that will destroy this dormant egg population, thereby rendering the animals instantaneously and irreversibly infertile.

Structural elucidation by chemical degradation mass spectrometry using a linear ion trap with electron transfer dissociation. The mass spectrometric instrumentation that we plan to acquire represents a true breakthrough in technology, and will be the first of its kind in operation in Australia. The instrument to be purchased will improve the ability of a wide cross section of researchers to characterize compounds important in fields as varied as medical research, agricultural biotechnology, and natural product characterization. All types of chemical research, from fundamental to applied, will benefit from access to this system, which has clearly positive implications with regard to societal impact. Implementing this type of frontier technology is an essential step in maintaining the world class capabilities of the Australian research community.

The primary aim of this proposal is to transform the premier genomic technology into a standard research tool; microarrays are now a priority for anyone studying the genetics underlying key biological processes. A principal challenge for the Australian research community is to capture all aspects of microarray technology and make them readily available. We will address these needs by developing a network to: -establish regular research meetings, -facilitate training in array methodologies and bioinformatics, -co-ordinate innovation of technologies,-provide centralised data warehousing, -provide access to automated high-level gene annotation, -provide data mining tools, -set standards for data management and exchange

Regional Facility for Real Time Analysis of Molecular Interactions. The ARC Facility for the Analysis of Biomacromolecular Interactions at the University of Wollongong and ANU serves many research groups working at the interface of chemistry and biology with the ultimate aim of drug target identification and drug development. New state-of-the-art instrumentation will enhance their capabilities and enable new activities. Specifically, the new instruments will facilitate characterization of macromolecular complexes and enable rapid and precise study in real time of the rates at which molecules interact, under many different experimental conditions. It will strengthen existing collaborations among the partner institutions and provide essential infrastructure for drug development projects.

Young Investigators Network on Next Generation Electronic Devices. This initiative will build an active, dynamic and strongly interdisciplinary network of young Australian scientists (most awarded their Ph.D. after 1985) working on the development of innovative electronic devices - a national research priority area with enormous economic and technological opportunity. The network will enable a nationally coordinated, internationally competitive approach that capitalizes on untapped opportunities, utilises existing/emerging Australian expertise and develops strong supporting links with similar networks overseas. The initiative will produce a public showcase of Australian strengths and opportunities in this field, and enable stronger collaborations and cooperative logistics management through the development of a dedicated network management website.
