Fluid mechanics and physiology of blockages in vascular systems. Vascular disease is a major health problem both in Australia and worldwide. In particular, cardiovascular disease is a major killer of adult Australians. Engineers and mathematicians working with biologists will gain a greater understanding of vascular diseases, a major health problem, including cardiovascular disease, which is one of the biggest killers worldwide, as well as tackling renal circulation problems, which are a significant problem and may contribute to hypertension. Detailed measurement and prediction will be undertaken of the mechanical loading and response of cells to their microenvironment, an important first step to controlling pathological responses which lead to a variety of autoimmune problems.

Mathematical measurement and modelling of neuronal degeneration. Currently about 150,000 Australian's suffer from cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's disease or dementia and this number is expected to double over the next few decades. By combining newly developed mathematical methods in complex systems with sophisticated neural imaging we will develop new techniques to advance the diagnosis and treatment of cognitive decline in normal ageing and neurodegenerative disease. This project will also maintain the collaborative link between researchers in Biomathematics at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York and researchers in Applied Mathematics at UNSW that enables training of Australian scientists in the vital area of mathematical bio-complexity.

Mathematical Biosciences Network. The network's aim is to stimulate the transfer of ideas, scientific insights, models and computational methods across the interface of mathematics and biology. Collaborative effort and training will occur to push forward the frontiers of biology and mathematics related to the fundamental problems of life, including how embryos develop, how diseases can be controlled, and how to describe and predict intra- and inter-cellular processes. A major theme of the network is the transfer of information through an e-science grid allowing direct access to experimental data and model simulations.

High resolution orientation selective pulsed EPR and END(T)OR in conjunction with computer simulation (XSophe) and computational chemistry will allow the determination of the electronic and geometric structure (distance and orientation of nuclei surrounding the metal ion(s)) of multiple redox centres in DMSOR, DorC and DMSDH to be determined. In addition pulsed ELDOR in conjunction with molecular modelling will enable the mapping (distance and orientation) of redox centres in complex multicentered metalloproteins (DMSDH and DorC) and in protein-protein complexes (DMSOR-DorC) providing information on the pathway of electron transfer and hence the role of the pyranopterins.

Verification of a theoretical model of the dynamical genesis of brain electrical activity. The physiological basis for the rhythmic scalp electrical activity known as the alpha rhythm has remained elusive despite being first recorded over eighty years ago. However, one of the applicants (DTJL) has developed a novel theory of the electroencephalogram (EEG) that theoretically articulates the necessary physiological conditions required for the genesis of this activity that is subject to rigorous experimental test. Empirical verification of this theory will pave the way to elucidating the functional importance of large scale brain electrical activity in neural information processing as well as enabling the rational use of the EEG for drug design and diagnosis.
