Stenting therapy offers new therapeutical strategies to improve the quality of healthcare for numerous cardiovascular disease patients. This project will address the critical issues in stent design involving the delivery, dilatation and ongoing interaction with blood vessel and fluid. The novel topological configurations are expected to bring significant improvement to stent ensuring long-term success. The numerical techniques to be developed for optimising topology will provide new tools for design of periodic structures, making a broader impact on an important class of engineering structures and thus benefiting many relevant fields.Read moreRead less

Summary
Large-volume, multi-use micro-computed tomography. This project aims to augment the existing X-ray micro-computed tomography (CT) scanning capabilities in South Australia and Australia by introducing a large-volume micro-CT scanner. This will enable three-dimensional scanning of large and heavy samples including whole machine parts, limbs/segments, prosthesis devices, large animals and vertebrates, fossils and plant root systems. The project expects to allow experimental testing rigs to be placed inside the scanner to test samples, such as mechanical testing of femurs or medical devices, while scanning, to study the structure-function relationships. This will build unlimited computer simulations of mechanical tests, valuable for precious specimens. Benefits will include aiding in risk reduction, decision making on products and a higher quality workforce.Read moreRead less

This research aims to propose and investigate a next generation high-energy absorbing helmet pad that will protect the Australian Defence Force soldiers against both ballistic and blast threats. New fundamental knowledge in the area of high-energy absorbing metamaterials will be obtained by using numerical modelling and experimental studies. The expected outcomes of the project include the development of a new wearable energy absorbing pad which can be used as the next generation combat helmet liners and accessories. The novel high-performance energy absorption system will have a wide range of direct applications in future personal armour, as well as sports gears and elderly healthcare products.Read moreRead less
