Discovery Projects - Grant ID: DP110100986

    Funder
    Australian Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $175,000.00
    Summary
The acoustics of a wide-range autonomous oscillator: how do brass players do it? While brass instruments are well understood, the complexities of the interaction with the player are not. This study will analyse how the player's lips and vocal tract interact with the instrument, leading to an understanding not only of the interesting physics involved, but to insight that will benefit players, teachers and students.

ARC Centre of Excellence for Integrative Brain Function. The Centre of Excellence for Integrative Brain Function will address one of the greatest scientific challenges of the 21st century to understand how the brain works. We will investigate complex functions such as attention, prediction and decision-making, which require the coordination of information processing by many areas of the brain. The Centre of Excellence for Integrative Brain Function will address one of the greatest scientific challenges of the 21st century to understand how the brain works. We will investigate complex functions such as attention, prediction and decision-making, which require the coordination of information processing by many areas of the brain. This will require a highly collaborative approach involving neurobiologists, cognitive scientists, engineers and physicists, allowing us to translate our discoveries into novel technologies for the social and economic benefit of all Australians. We will also train a new generation of multidisciplinary researchers, and contribute our expertise to a range of public education and awareness programs.

Cryogenic quantum microscope facility. This project aims to establish a cryogenic, quantum microscope facility in Australia. Quantum sensing is a new field that harnesses the properties of individual quantum systems to realise new types of detection and imaging with unprecedented combination of sensitivity and spatial resolution. The potential innovations, applications and benefits to society are far reaching across the full spectrum of scientific and engineering activity, from the development of atomic-scale imaging of protein structures for drug discovery, to the study of chemical, physical, and biological processes and materials for advanced technology and manufacturing.

Discovery Early Career Researcher Award - Grant ID: DE120100295

    Funder
    Australian Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $375,000.00
    Summary
Computational modelling of nanostructures designed to mimic ion-selective biological channels. The project aims to design nanotubes (hollow tubes with nanometre diameters) constructed from various materials, such as carbon, to broadly mimic biological ion channels. This research will facilitate the development of efficient desalination membranes, potent antibiotics and pharmaceutical products for treatments of cancer and cystic fibrosis.
