Summary
The Australian Mosque Today: Architectural Collaborations. This project aims to investigate collaborations between architects and Muslim communities in Australia. The project will analyze ten mosques, from design consultation through to construction, completed since 2000. This focus on the professional design process will provide innovative insights into creative collaboration and cross-cultural engagement. Expected outcomes of this project include a significant, richly nuanced counter-narrative ....The Australian Mosque Today: Architectural Collaborations. This project aims to investigate collaborations between architects and Muslim communities in Australia. The project will analyze ten mosques, from design consultation through to construction, completed since 2000. This focus on the professional design process will provide innovative insights into creative collaboration and cross-cultural engagement. Expected outcomes of this project include a significant, richly nuanced counter-narrative to pervasive, isolationist representations of Australian Muslim communities. The findings will be presented in scholarly publications and a major public exhibition to promote new knowledge about the place of Islam in Australia and to build faith (literally and metaphorically) in multicultural Australia.

Place and parametricism: Provocations for the rethinking of design. This project aims to explore whether quantitative methods of digital and parametric design can adequately encompass place. Quantitative digital and parametric approaches increasingly dominate contemporary architecture, but people assume architectural design should be essentially oriented to questions of place. The impact of location-specific urban digital social information networks and public displays on the City of Melbourne. The purpose of this project is to enhance the city as a vibrant destination by taking digital content and anchoring it in the physical world. The outcomes will be physical nodes of interaction in urban cultural hubs - e.g., museums, libraries, cafes - allowing users to post media, stories and events that are locally relevant for others to consume.
Responsive transport environments: spatial and visual user information technologies to allow improved passenger flow and a better customer experience. The research will investigate how to relieve growing usage pressure on Australian public transport by using user-responsive digital technologies to offer a complementary approach to infrastructure expansion. Urban interiors: architectural change and the city since the 1960s. This project aims to examine architectural and urban change since the 1960s. Increasingly, urban lives are spent indoors as we move from the concourses of transport interchanges through commercial lobbies, shopping malls and the atriums of hotels and museums. Designing for early engagement and wellbeing in palliative care. This project aims to generate design guidelines to assist architects in creating better palliative care environments to mitigate the stress associated with end-of-life events for patients, their families and healthcare teams. Facing death, either one’s own or that of a family member, is one of life’s most difficult experiences. Targeted design interventions can encourage early engagement with palliative care, enhance communication ....Designing for early engagement and wellbeing in palliative care. This project aims to generate design guidelines to assist architects in creating better palliative care environments to mitigate the stress associated with end-of-life events for patients, their families and healthcare teams. The design and construction of quality, sustainable and affordable pre-made housing in Australia - optimisation and integration. Historically, industrialised construction has resulted in an industrialisation of the parts, rather than an industrialisation of the ensemble. In contrast, this project will integrate architecture and engineering, as well as construction and development to optimise the ensemble, and deliver architectural quality in industrially produced affordable housing.
