Urban vertical schools are new types of schools in Australia. There are no evidence-based Australian precedents to guide designers or educators, no formal knowledge sharing processes that draw on experiences of pioneers, and little understanding of what these spaces mean for student capability and wellbeing. This evaluative case study will bring together evidence from designers, educators and students in three newly built urban, vertical schools. Project findings will point to inclusive principles for designing and leading in physical, digital and social school spaces to maximise student wellbeing and capability. Insights into student experiences in urban, vertical school spaces will have value for infrastructure spending in all schools.

Using an Adelaide case study, UCity, this project will investigate the social benefit of building mixed-use vertical communities in the Australian urban context. Using an innovative Social Value Framework, the project will establish and demonstrate the multi-dimensional impacts of such developments in practice. The project utilises citizen science for real time auditing of the built environment by residents and users; smart technologies for environmental and behavioural monitoring; and data analytics and design automation for spatial analysis of building use. The results will inform new models of sustainable high-rise, mixed-use buildings; providing evidence for a Social Value Framework to become a core consideration in Australian industry.

Co-Design Guide for Transforming Ageing Apartment Buildings. The project aims to unlock the redevelopment potential of ageing apartment housing by developing a co-design process to enable transformative redesign to become a mainstream redevelopment option in partnership with leaders in the emerging practices of transformative redesign. The outcomes will be a conceptual framework and practical guide to realise sustainable housing futures beyond demolition. This will benefit the Australian environment, economy and society by changing thinking around sustainable delivery of housing, creating new industries and services in the construction sector, and facilitating the effective transformation of old buildings into attractive spaces that add value for residents, neighbourhoods and cities.
