    Summary
    The role of mycorrhizal fungi in nutrient supply and habitat specificity of the rare underground orchid (Rhizanthella gardneri). The underground orchid (Rhizanthella gardneri) is an extremely rare achlorophyllous myco-heterotroph that shares a mycorrhizal fungus with broom bush (Melaleuca uncinata). This project will investigate habitat requirements for R. gardneri and assess the orchid dependence on M. uncinata for carbon and nutrient supply. This project will investigate habitat requirements for R. gardneri and assess the orchid dependence on M. uncinata for carbon and nutrient supply. We will measure magnitude and timing of nutrient and carbon transfers between M. uncinata roots, fungal hyphae and R. gardneri using stable isotope techniques. This project will provide knowledge essential for conserving the underground orchid, a unique Australian plant, and other critically endangered orchids.

Most extremophiles are Archaea; an order of life separate from Bacteria and Eucaryotes. The project will generate the first genome sequence that was initiated in Australia, and the first genome sequence of any cold adapted organism. Extremophiles are microorganisms that can thrive in otherwise inhospitable environments. Most extremophiles are Archaea; an order of life separate from Bacteria and Eucaryotes. The project will generate the first genome sequence that was initiated in Australia, and the first genome sequence of any cold adapted organism. Associated functional studies include global analyses of protein expression (proteomics) and mRNA expression using micro-arrays, and work targeted at RNA binding proteins and protein folding systems involved in the thermally sensitive process of protein synthesis. The nature and scope of the work will impact on fundamental cellular processes and provide enormous innovative biotechnological potential.

The objectives of the research programme will be to develop novel science, engineering and technology that will allow cost efficient conversion of remote gas reserves to liquid fuels and/or chemicals with minimal greenhouse gas emissions. The significance of the proposal rests in the fact that Australia has large remote location gas fields that cannot be exploited but faces, within ten years, trillion dollars a year balance of .... The conversion of remote location natural gas to fuels and chemicals. The objectives of the research programme will be to develop novel science, engineering and technology that will allow cost efficient conversion of remote gas reserves to liquid fuels and/or chemicals with minimal greenhouse gas emissions. The significance of the proposal rests in the fact that Australia has large remote location gas fields that cannot be exploited but faces, within ten years, trillion dollars a year balance of payments deficits due to a shortgae of liquid fuels. The development of new processes for gas to liquids conversion and new technology for existing processes is the essential aim of the proposed research.
