The project investigates the problem of communication security in the mobile environment where both confidentiality and authenticity are of prime concern. Stream ciphers are a very natural choice in mobile environment as they provide an efficient cryptographic protection using a limited computing resources. We model stream cipher as a system of multivariate equations. In this approach, security of stream ciphers can be measured as the complexity of an algorithm that solves the appropriate system of equations. This project leads to new techniques for the design and analysis of stream ciphers.

Investigation and Development of Parallel Large Scale Record Linkage Techniques. Record linkage aims at matching records of the same entity (like customer or patient) in large (administrative) databases. The outcomes of the proposed research will improve current techniques in terms of efficiency, accuracy and the need for human intervention. Through experimental studies and stochastic modelling the performance of traditional and new methods for data cleaning, standardisation and linkage will be assessed. The effect of the statistical dependency of attribute values will be studied. New methods using clustering for blocking large datasets, and predictive models including interaction terms will be implemented, analysed and evaluated on high-performance computers and office-based PC clusters.

Developing Sophisticated e-Business Automation. This project will provide theoretical foundations and a practical platform for developing advanced e-business automation technology. As such, it will significantly enhance Australia's leading role in the cutting edge research on e-business automation. By applying the new methodology and technology, Australian IT industries will be able to develop highly efficient e-market application systems, which will be financially beneficial to most organizations as Australia business and institutions are moving towards a more electronically oriented future. With a strong research team and collaborative research training environment, this project will further promote Australia's international reputation as a leader in Computing and IT research.

Data and Job Scheduling in Large-Scale Distributed Systems. Distributed computing systems are the platform of choice for many applications. Data and Job Scheduling in Large-Scale Distributed Systems. Distributed computing systems are the platform of choice for many applications. In these systems, applications are submitted by a large number of users that compete for the shared heterogeneous resources (computers, storage communication links, etc.). Thus, a distributed system can be viewed as a collection of computing and communication resources shared by active users. Towards this end, a new generation of algorithms and software tools need to be developed for the efficient utilisation of these systems through an appropriate allocation of the available resources to competing applications and users. This project is a major step in this direction.

An Intelligent System for Pre-Mission Analysis of Helicopter Medical Emergency Services. Paramedic crew on board air ambulance helicopter provides rescue and medical emergency, to critically injured/ill cases, in metropolitan/regional/rural areas. These operations are complex and involve mission analysis that governs critical life saving decisions. Currently the analysis and decisions are crew knowledge and experience dependent and thus prone to human error. The complex process of mission analysis needs to be modelled as an 'Intelligent System' to support critical life saving decisions. In this research project, academics and paramedics will jointly develop an 'Intelligent Decision Support System' to address the key problem of pre-mission analysis and decision support, for Air Ambulance Services. The project is in the designated research priority area for 2003 funding - 'Complex/Intelligent Systems'.
