Summary
High Performance Optical Profilometer for mapping micro/meso/macroscopic topography. Developing advanced, high performance new materials requires an understanding of surfaces and interfaces. Making a small area, low yield material or device is a regular occurrence within the Australian research community. The ability to create reproducible, high yield materials requires greater understanding of the stresses, uniformities and deformations in a material over large areas. The proposed instrument ....High Performance Optical Profilometer for mapping micro/meso/macroscopic topography. The proposed instrument can measure topography over many centimeters-squared with sub-micron spatial resolution, currently beyond the capabilities of researchers in Australia. By providing a quantitative method to measure surface textures, the instrument will also support Australian industries looking for improved process control.Read moreRead less

Nitride semiconductors are widely used in mobile phone and lighting applications. The Low Temperature Nitride Semiconductor Group at Macquarie University have specialized in improving the quality of these materials using growth techniques that will allow gallium nitride to become commercially viable for room lighting. In collaboration with researchers in Europe we intend to develop and exploit the next generation of nitride materials for high-speed mobile communications and photonic applications. The team assembled for this project have excellent credentials in the development of these materials and, importantly, an excellent ability to probe and understand material phenomena.Read moreRead less
Corrosion Resistance of Nanocrystalline Materials. Novel structure and the associated unique properties of nanostructured materials confer potentials for their exciting industrial applications, such as drug delivery to specified locations for cancer treatment, exceptionally high sensitivity sensors, miniaturisation in computers/electronic/communication industry, nano electro-mechanical systems, catalytic applications and exceptionally high strength materials. In most of the applications, the nanomaterials have to demonstrate acceptable corrosion resistance in the operation environment. However, corrosion resistance of nanostructured materials has not been investigated. The proposal will investigate the mechanistic aspect of localized corrosion and cracking of nanostructured materials.Read moreRead less
