This project considers issues of cultural change, continuity and identity as they arise from the historical foundations of Shark Bay's present day community in Western Australia. It examines the ways in which Indigenous customary practices continue among the Malgana people, and how connection to sea and country remains an important facet of life. Aboriginal song lines and trade routes became the foundation for stock routes, coach ways and bitumen highways because successful European exploration used the expediency of Aboriginal guides who travelled along the routes already familiar to them. These routes are documented in instruments of land management such as churingas, toas or shields, and in the mnemotic memory of songs and stories. This project contributes to the evidence base of responses to Indigenous family violence by detailing models of practice in Victoria. It will focus on how partnerships between Indigenous and mainstream responses can be built and sustained. The critical analysis of these models of practice and partnerships will also have implications for future policy and funding directions. It does so by asking ?what is Indigenous about Indigenous research? and ?can there be a distinctive Indigenous Australian perspective on epistemology, methodology and philosophy of research??

The research will be informed by analysis of key text/ discourses on Indigenous research methodologies by Indigenous scholars engaged in transformative praxis. Outcomes include the completion of a PhD candidature, mapping concepts and theories of Indigenous Research Methodologies, developing an Indigenous intellectual framework to assist Indigenous scholars to negotiate knowledge production and research methodologies.
