The project aims to advance significantly the interplay between additive combinatorics, number theory and graph theory. The project will use and advance methods and results of additive combinatorics and give new applications to such fundamental problems on Cayley graphs as connectivity, random walks, colouring and dominating sets. The significance of the project is ensured by its goal of advancing existing results and methods of additive combinatorics and also in finding their new applications that have long-lasting impact on paramount problems for Cayley graphs that underlie the architecture of crucial communication networks. Achieving progress on these problems and developing relevant methods of additive combinatorics will be the main outcomes. Read moreRead less
Hecke Algebras in Algebra and Analysis. The aim of this program is to adapt techniques from harmonic analysis and operator-algebraic representation theory to study Hecke algebras arising in algebraic and geometric settings. The relevant analytic structures are C*-algebras and the fundamental question is then "Which Hecke algebras have a faithful enveloping C*-algebra?" We investigate this question, first by developing an appropriate theory of crossed products by semigroups and, second, by using ....Hecke Algebras in Algebra and Analysis. The relevant analytic structures are C*-algebras and the fundamental question is then "Which Hecke algebras have a faithful enveloping C*-algebra?" We investigate this question, first by developing an appropriate theory of crossed products by semigroups and, second, by using the notion of topologization which enables the Hecke algebra to be studied in the context of topological groups.Read moreRead less
Harmonic analysis on Lie groups via hypergroup convolution structures. This project studies convolution structures for conjugacy classes
of nilpotent and compact Lie groups and the connections with fusion rule algebras. The aims are to establish a suitable theory of almost periodic functions on a nilpotent Lie group to allow a

Operator algebras associated to product systems, and higher-rank-graph algebras. Operator algebras are used to study a wide range of physical systems in quantum physics and quantum computing, and in electrical engineering. The clearer our picture of how operator algebras work, the better we are able to predict and explain how these physical systems will behave. Operator algebras are used to study a wide range of physical systems in quantum physics and quantum computing, and in electrical engineering. The clearer our picture of how operator algebras work, the better we are able to predict and explain how these physical systems will behave. The proposed research project is aimed at showing that we can describe operator algebras in terms of simple coloured diagrams rather than abstract mathematical symbols. Consequently, the project will lead to a simpler and less technical approach to the physical problems which operator algebras are used to study.Read moreRead less
Holonomy groups in Lorentzian geometry. The project studies mathematical models used in physical theories, such as general relativity and string theory, to create a global picture of the universe. The outcomes will enhance the role Australia plays in these developments and contribute to the mathematical knowledge which lies at the foundations of modern technologies.
Curvature flows and spectral estimates. Curvature flows are a class of geometrically motivated equations, modelled on the heat equation. Recently, researchers have developed new methods for studying the regularity of solutions to these equations, and applied them to a different problem, that of estimating quantities depending on the smaller eigenvalues of a Schroedinger operator. This project builds on the early success of this research and will produce a new understanding of the behaviour of ei ....Curvature flows and spectral estimates. Recently, researchers have developed new methods for studying the regularity of solutions to these equations, and applied them to a different problem, that of estimating quantities depending on the smaller eigenvalues of a Schroedinger operator. This project builds on the early success of this research and will produce a new understanding of the behaviour of eigenvalues, establish sharp estimates for spectral quantities, particularly on manifolds with curvature bounds, and find optimal conditions under which non-compact solutions to curvature flows are stable.Read moreRead less
