This project examines how state and federal governments can better protect and support the values, beliefs and cultural practices of different cultural and religious groups, especially in matters concerning family life, community identity and freedom of conscience, within a framework of respect for human rights.

Improvements to Australia's federal consitutional system could return between $9 billion and $20 billion each year to taxpayers (up to 3% of GDP). The problem affects service delivery in areas like health and education and hampers our ability to meet new challenges like water scarcity and climate change. Public Law Implications of Treaty Between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians. Australia is the only Commonwealth country that has never signed an official treaty with its Indigenous peoples. It is not surprising then that a treaty between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians has been cited as a goal of the reconciliation process by bodies including the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation. This project will research the effect of intergovernmental co-operation, through bodies such as the Council of Australian Governments, on Australia's system of constitutional democracy. The Australasian Legal History Library: Creating historical depth in legal data on AustLII, to improve all legal research. The Australasian Legal History Library, to be located for free access on AustLII, will provide comprehensive legislation and case law from all colonies (subsequently Australian States, Territories or New Zealand) up to 1950. Its citator will show how these historical materials are used in current legal decisions. It will be a revolution for legal history research.
An International Comparative Analysis of Refugee Decision-Making. Surprisingly little information is available about the actual practice of refugee decision-making and the results of different kinds of claims (which are only recorded by the country of the claimant, not the basis of the claim). This project focuses upon practice "on the ground" to look at what is really happening. Currently, almost nothing is known about asylum seekers by category of claim (ie race, religion). The introduction of a national emissions trading scheme is the cornerstone of the Australian Government's response to climate change, the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme. The free access ‘Foundations of Common Law Library’ will include reported cases from superior courts, and selected others, in all common law jurisdictions.
