Project aims to fabricate novel silicon based optical switches in the form of cantilevered mirrors integrated to interface with silica optical waveguides integrated collimation lens. Significantly, it paves the way for low cost integration of optical switches with array waveguides for an all-optical dynamically reconfigurable dense wavelength division multiplexing network used in modern broadband telecommunication systems. International market demand for such devises is enormous. Expected outcomes include the development of arrays of low loss 2x2 integrated optical waveguide cross-switches prototypes, securing the intellectual property rights and disseminating the work internationally.Read moreRead less

This project will make terahertz waveguide-based devices by exploiting metamaterials, man-made composite materials capable of controlling light in new ways. This project will build hollow-core metamaterial waveguides, where the large dimension (a few millimetres) of current rigid waveguides will be reduced to a few tens of microns. This project will demonstrate tuneable spectral filtering using these novel waveguides, leading to realisation of the world's first hollow-core waveguide-based metamaterial device. The outcome will have a profound impact on the next generation of terahertz devices, high resolution imaging and high sensitivity biosensors, which are indispensable tools for many disciplines including biology, medicine, forensic and public safety.Read moreRead less

Although it is well known that aggressive honeybees are very effective at detecting, pursuing and intercepting moving targets, this behaviour has never been studied quantitatively. This project will use high-speed video cinematography to investigate this behaviour, to develop visual algorithms for the detection of moving targets, and to create dynamical models of the mechanisms that control pursuit. The resulting algorithms will be incorporated into unmanned aerial vehicles for detecting, monitoring and tracking other objects in the sky, and their performance will be evaluated. The results will provide a better understanding of the biological basis of pursuit behaviour, as well as lead to novel technologies for aerial surveillance and safety.Read moreRead less

Atomic-scale structural characterisation of quantum-dot nanostructures for novel photovoltaic applications. This project aims to design, fabricate and characterise innovative quantum-dot solar cells in order to overcome the atomic-scale defects that limit current approaches. The scientific and engineering understanding acquired through this project will enable the rapidly growing global solar-cell industry to produce higher-efficiency III-V solar cells.
Strategies for mid-air collision avoidance in aircraft: lessons from bird flight. Birds seldom collide with each other and other objects, despite the high speeds at which they fly in complex environments. This project will examine how birds sense and avoid impending collisions, and will use these results to design novel strategies for the detection and avoidance of aircraft mid-air collisions.

This project intends to identify and analyse the structural vulnerabilities of the emerging ‘smart grid’ for electricity supply. The smart grid integrates a cyber network into the existing power network. Although the smart grid enables the integration of more renewable energy sources and contributes to an environmentally sustainable society, the network structure can introduce new vulnerabilities that may cause large cascading failures and lead to catastrophic blackouts. The project aims to establish a quantitative framework to analyse smart grid structural vulnerability. Furthermore, innovative reinforcement and defence strategies will be proposed that could reduce the risk of large blackout and build a more robust smart grid.Read moreRead less
Liquid crystal-based optical fibre hydrophone system for underwater surveillance and ocean monitoring. The aim of this project is to design, implement and optimise a new class of optical sensing system which targets underwater surveillance and ocean monitoring. This project is expected to lead to improved national security, broaden Australia's photonics knowledge base, and contribute to greater international scientific collaboration.

Australia has the world's second largest reserve (after China) of high energy-density permanent magnet (neodymium-iron-boron) material for the IPM motor. The present limitation of the machine to be driven sensorless over a wide speed range with field weakening is believed to be holding back its widespread use in applications other than servo-type which requires high-resolution mechanical sensors. Extension of the motor speed range by a combination of magnetic system design (for large field weakening range), and sensorless position and flux estimation with sufficient accuracy for fast dynamic control should lead to large scale adoption of this motor, and hence to significant improvement in energy efficiency and market share for Australia.Read moreRead less
